The best Pizza I've ever had is at Amore Pizza off the Van Wyck Expwy at Linden Place in Flushing.

They sell so much that the slices are always fresh and not re-heated. It's even better WITHOUT toppings.

Whenever I'm in NYC I still stop in and it's still great.

Sorry Rob...but all of us here in NY have a plethera of "Pizza Joints" to choose from. Here are mine.

Spasso's of Wantagh - terrific Grandma's Pie & Chicken Franchese pizza

Pizzeli's of Bellmore - All their pies are made with "Asian flour" & the result is that the crust has a terrific taste which is their signature.

Umberto's of New Hyde Park - "just outstanding" with whatever choice you make. ( not just pizza )

Vincent's of N. Bellmore - I have been patronizing this place for a long time. ( it is 5 minutes from my house ) I know Vinny and he takes care of me always. He make a great fresh tomato & basil pie.

Also, whenever I'm in the Ozone Park - Howard Beach area I get pizza there ( can't remember the name) I'm sure someone out there will help me remember) but it is truly outstanding.

Mitch, it's New Park in Howard Beach where i still go when I'm near Kennedy Airport and where the great race riot occured. But the one place i live for is L&B Spumoni Gardens on 86 St off Ave V for Squares withe the cheese on the bottom and the best sauce in history on top. I brought a 1/2 pie
over for the Jet game to my friend's place and my son Matt had 6 squares!!For slices I still go to Totonno's in Coney Island. But the best pizza is actually on Ave J under the train in a mega religious jewish neighborhood DiFaro's!!!

  • At 11/27/2006 11:12 AM , Blogger augie said...

The DiFaro's experience: Old man Difaro is the only one to make the pies. The place is beyond a total dive. People come in order and wait and wait while he performs like an artist. Everything is freshly grinded by hand. When the bubbling pie comes out of the brick oven he sprinkles some incredible chhese on top and then breaks out a scissor and cuts up fresh basile randomly on top. Viola a masterpiece!!People actually take the Q train from all over to go there. He's truly the last of the great pizza makers left that were trained at the foot of the master Lombardo, which is still doing a ton of business on Spring off Mulberry St.

I haven't been there in years but the best Pizza ever was GLORIA's on Main Street in Flushing, Queens.

You had to eat it hot out of the oven right there at the counter and could not take it home. Once it cooled off the taste was gone. The store is always mobbed.

Bobby what took you so long to mention Gloria???
    I loved that place too.
Try Amore on Linden Place. It's the SAME!!
Great place to go before a Mets game.

You people are driving me crazy. I'm drooling as I read the comments.

We have a decent place nearby , a family from Arthur ave in the Bronx. They claim to have installed a water system in order to replicate NY. I think it's BS , but they do a decent pie. Great desserts & espresso. Plus their NY accent is refreshing.

My favorite: square thin crust made in a pan. They call it Nonna's

    David....

Great to see you are still reading the blog.

My daughter Jamie came home last week for Thanksgiving, (she goes to school in Maryland) and her first request when she arrived last Tuesday was "please can we have pizza tonight?"

I guess when you are outside of the metro area, there are some things you truly miss.

    Don't you guys listen?
Do I have to drag you by the hand???

If you had a slice at my place on Linden Place you couldn't tell the difference?

We should meet there and then go bowling!!

    Don't belive me?
Even my nephew Taylor loves the place and he doesn't like anything!

Steve is that you? I have been sitting on the boat Atlantic Star waiting to go fluke fishing with you since last July?

Is it safe to assume that you are not coming this year?

It would be nice if you sent me a pizza.

    LOL

And yes you have to take Mitch and me by the hand. By the way are you buying?

I know that place well off the Whitestone Expressway in the Pathmark shopping Center if memory serves me correctly. Remember Mitch and I lived in Le Havre a stone's throw from there a million years ago.

    LOL

Steve...I promise, I'll check it out.

Bobby, Ah, Le Havre...that was a lifetime ago. If I wasn't at Gloria's....I'd venture across 166th Street and end up at Ripples.

For all you country folk, before there was a Makowsky's....there was a bungalow colony known as Modena Gardens. Many a Modena "ite" made the transition to Makowsky's ( Schleifers, Steckers, Fleisses, Shuman's etc ) In Modena the family who eventually opened up "Chez Joey's" were known as "Patsy's"

They made the best pizza in all of upstate New York. I guess it was the tomato sauce that did it for me. (I didn't even need to blot it with a napkin) I do miss those good ole days.

  • At 11/29/2006 8:45 PM , Blogger Rob said...

Chez Joey was like home base. My 1st sub-zzeria experience.

Spent many a late 'rough night ' there in the college years , it's changed since then , it's more like a pizzaraunt

hey Augie:Do you remember? Can you remember? lol

Nona, the vegetable stand was called Bandini (or something like that).

And you are also right about Chez Joey. Jerry and Fran Nuzzo have been friends of ours for over 40 years!!!(oh my!!!)In fact they were at our wedding.

Jodi, Rob and Mitch...do you remember that Jerry and Fran would bring up sandwiches for our parents "crowd" on Saturday nights?

In fact sometimes I would sneak into the kitchen and learn how to cook from Jerry.

We saw Jerry and Fran a few months ago. I hope that they read this blog and see that they are still with all of us.

Rob:It's true Chez Joey's was great when at Makowski's but how many late night slices I don't remember while at SUNY New Paltz and their Subs were the first subs of that style i ever had, I can picuter the oil/vinagar dripping all over the place and can test the onions too!
But last New years day Lento's on 3rd Ave in Bay Ridge closed down. they had the absolutely best ultra thin crisp crust BAr Style pizza that I loved to go have with my Basketball buddies after our all night Friday games with some pitchers. No more Lentos. When you see Grandma' thin pizza it's a takeoff of Lento's.

You guys have to stop already. Amber my dog and I have put on ten pounds since you started talking about this mouth watering Pizza.

With me ten pounds isn't anything as Gary once said I could turn sideways and hide behind a blade of grass; but poor Amber she can hardly fit through her dog door!

    LOL

    Everyone....Keep it up!

Rob finally found something we all want to talk about or better yet...."go grab a bite"

Now I've heard about great pizza joints in B'klyn, Queens, Nassau, Manhattan, & Ulster. Why hasn't anyone checked in from the Bronx, Staten Island & Jersey?

Next blog....Bagels? (LBJ Bagels of course, gone but not forgotten...right Jack?)

Gyros? ( We all know that Kramer's favorite place was on the subway...I still LMAO when I see that episode.

Nothing to do with pizza but I buy most of my CD's DVD's on W4th St at Discorama and it's really way below cost. Lot's of cheap stuff ,all new cd's are $11 and I bought Soprano's season 6 for $60 when J&R has it at $80

Yo Augie , I spend almost nothing for cds. I'm addicted to downloading and have compiled a massive amount of All kind of stuff over the yrs. Many things you won't find in stores.

    Ask the KIV-meister , Steve himself , I heard he has a big I-Pod...LOL

Unfortunately, (ha) my sons share in this addiction . I've raised several generations of music lovers. Too bad I don't like their music.

Bruce, I've always been a Brooklyn guy, but I don't descriminate. I'll go anywhere for a great slice, for a great bakery, or a great burger or deli.
    (except the Bronx!!! Sorry Jackie!!!)

When I first got my drivers license we'd go to Adventurers Inn for a snack and to play the arcade games.

I forgot about the Ice King of Corona. I never knew what to get,
lemon, chocolate chip, rainbow, cherry, pina colada..........
I'd get at least two because I can never decide.

I'm still convinced the best pizza in NYC can be found at Patsy's on 1st Ave, and 118th St.

For those of you that have ventured uptown, the trip would not be complete without crossing the street to get the best ices available anywhere at Rex's.

One more great Pizza place. on the corner of Houston and Thompson St is Arturo's a classic southern Italian restaurant, with live piano player, sports on TV and a brick oven fueled by coal for awesome pizza, when I'm not getting the chicken/eggplant parm with spaghetti plate.

When my son Adam was young we took him and the other Cub scouts to a pizza place where they let them each make there own mini pizza. This was truly a hilarious experience, especially after the pies were baked. Watching these kids admiring and then devour their creations was a real 'Kodak' moment.
    (and Alka-Seltzer)

The next month's trip was to a Carvel store owned by one of the fathers. Likewise here, the kids made their own ice cream cakes.

Our Pack was sponsored by our Temple. Our course everything was based around food!!!LOL

Great moments in Pizza eating. John Travolta in Sat. Night Fever getting 2 slices at Lenny's on 86th St and 20th Ave in Bensonhurst and putting one on top of other and chowing down. 1/2 my neighborhood claims to have seen it live. Me ,i was having an egg cream across the street next to Hy Tulip, had to wash down my dog/kraut with something kosher

Did you know there are Pizza associations and that some of the largest trade shows feature only Pizza. Las Vegas hosts these most of the time and they attract 1000s of people each yr. It's a monstrous business, a sub-category of the food service industry

Went to a Kenny Vance & Johnny Maestro concert at Queens College last night with Larry & Steve. Had a great time....

Steve insisted on going to Amore's Pizza in Flushing before the concert. I have to say that it reminded me of Gloria's. It was "great" with the right amount of oil & cheese dripping on a very thin crust. ...yummy!

We had a great time at the concert later...and am proud to say we might have been the youngest people there.

    Hard to believe...but true!

The best pizza place is L&B on 86th Street in Brooklyn. They have the best square slices known to man! Get a few squares and wash it down with a spumoni. Nothing like it. Out here in Commack, the best pizza is Emilio's. However; nothing beats a Brooklyn slice!

Second place goes to Full Moon on Arthur and E187th in the Bronx. Great round pies.

BTW; Chez Joey had a decent slice.
