Give a Yell ....Again

Attention All Campers.....It's now a year since we shared our Fantastic Reunion Weekend. Much has happened since then ....we've gained new friendships , strengthened existing ones and lost some dear ones too. Even so, our bond is stronger than ever . As a 'retrospective summary' , I (we) invite each and every 'Makowsky Maniac' to sign in and let's hear from you...."Give a Yell "

Just about this time last year, I had picked up Ellen, Rob & Cody at Kennedy Airport. I had not seen Ellen & Rob in some 20 plus years. Even though we had been organizing and speaking to one another over the past 6 months it still was amazing to see them once again. Even though Ellen was hobbling on crutches and Rob was walking with Cody it was as if time stood still and I suddenly was transformed and mesmerized by their appearance. The anticipation was over and "Reunion Week" had begun. The wide smiles and laughter had returned. My cheeks were hurting. It was terrific. The reality set in on July 15th when I saw all of you once again. Heidi Fleiss said it best. "The amazing thing about the colony is you really remember everybody in a very different way." Well, she is correct, and although I recognized most, once we all spoke the memories just came back instantly. I, for one just want to say to all of you, thank you all for coming. It became one of the most rewarding experiences of my life and I will truly never forget it.

All our roads lead to the same place, Rock Hill Rd. The reunion will stand frozen in time along with all the other wonderful memories and love we continue to share.

We spent the week before the reunion camping out at the Streeters. They put up with our craziness, mess and had a great warm-up before the reunion. I'm ready for another ....2008 sounds Pretty good to me right now

BTW- Did anybody eat the candy from the goodie bags ? What was your favorite Item?

Oh Shari, you can't imagine what it was like. Seeing all those faces from your memories.

For some the reunion was a one time thing, great, fun, nice to see you. For me it was so much more, it was a chance to rekindle friendships, real friendships. Last night I spent an hour on the phone with Lori, just like when we were kids. Somedays the talk is a little more serious, about health, family, kids. Sometimes we are like two teenagers, talking about boys, the weekend and just BSing.

I turn on my computer and there are emails from Stephie, Nona and Mitch. Don't go to Florida anymore without visiting Rob and Ellen. And you know, my memory is soooooo much better than I thought. You all brought back moments that had become just a little hazy.

I have been really lucky, have kept in touch with and seen a lot of my friends. Even some of the "A" group :).

The reunion was something I will never forget, but the gifts that it gave me, well that's "priceless"

It was almost as though time stood still.

I can still remember meeting people in the lobby of the hotel and asking Judy....."who is that???

We are all the same people though many of us have changed to look at us. At Makowskys I used to hide behind trees. Now the entire forest hides behind ME! and Jackie can hide behind a tree. Go figure! Seriously though, while we look a little different, you can still see the campers through their eyes. That will never change.

We've been able to keep in touch with so many people this past year and I am very greatful for that.

I hope that you all have a terrific summer and remember our great reunion. Also please remember to keep in touch.

    Love to you all

Jodi, I hope that we can do it again. I would love to see all of you and have some time together. I am so glad that you have reconnected with your friends and made new ones. That is a blessing.

When I looked at the videos, on line, I only recognized Heidi. She looked exactly the same. Everyone else looked very nice, but very different.

Jodi, I thought that you were in the A group... :-)

  • At 7/10/2007 8:31 PM , Blogger Rob said...

    Jodi was in the A , B , & C groups. Everyone likes her. Still do .

Have all the groups merged into one now that we're....(pause)...older ?

Yo , Steve , I'll bet you're still quick on those flipper buttons.

I had a flashback the other day...I was at the Hard Rock Hotel Shoppes doing some business (really , I was)waiting for Hoffman's Chocolates to open (yummy stuff BTW) Meanwhile, music is piped through the area.(outdoors) Well The Vogues come on . I was at first shocked ...The Vogues - Hard Rock Hotel .? I was immediately transformed to the luncheonette eating a fugicle on the porch. A true Juke Box moment. Does this ever happen to anyone else or am crazy?

  • At 7/10/2007 11:03 PM , Blogger Shari S said...

You are right Rob; Jodi was and is always so nice to everyone. Her kindness comes through in each of her postings. I remember her always having so much spirit in the color wars. I do also remember her rolling her hair with big, empty cans on top of her head. (Am I right about this, Jodi?) That always gave her that ultra sheik hair style. I remember a few others who used cans to get that great hair... Stand up and be counted, Girls. ;-)

Also, do you remember that the fudgsicles always had this wonderful, icy coating on them? The ONLY place to eat one WAS on the back porch or as a camper, on the grass next to the porch. Can anyone find a good fudgsicle today?

  • At 7/11/2007 1:17 PM , Blogger Jodi said...

Yes Shari, again your memory does not fail you. My sister and I wrapped our hair for years. Such kind words from you, thanks. I keep telling my Shari to come on and say hi, she is a busy woman.

I was not a big fudgecicle fan, but did I love Blue Ices. Loved to scrape the bottom, the little syrupy ice that formed on bottom, that was my favorite.

Some days I can just close my eyes and be back there.........great memories

Jodi, say hi to your sister, Shari, for me. What is she doing to keep busy? I am enjoying the summer off from teaching kindergarten. It is nice to have some time to relax with my family, like we did when we were kids...

I met a guy recently who lives in Stone Ridge. Guess who his doctor was when he was a kid, actually took care of his whole family...DR TOCCO....He died a few years ago, practiced for a very long time. Who knew that I would meet a guy and get all excited that we had the same "Pink Medicine". Now there is a basis for a relationship. Actually a pretty nice guy, who knows......

Hi sweetie, glad you finally made it back.

I just wanted to wish my friend Lori a HAPPY BIRTHDAY. She probably won't see this, but I wanted to do it anyway.

I remember last year, the Friday before the reunion, I was sooooo excited. So amazing that a year has past, feels like yesterday. I remember seeing Mitch Fleiss and his eyes filling up, Helene and I screaming as we saw eachother for the first time. Seeing Hy walk up to the front door of the hotel and thinking, WOW...he doesn't age.

None of us will forget Frieda dancing that night or popping wheelies with her golf cart the next day. Will any of us lose the feeling we had walking down to the lunchonette. I remember Debbie Brown and I passing the cherry tree, she looked at me and said "I can almost see them". I knew what she meant. Because of the reunion and the feelings and memories it stirred, I see them all a lot more clearly.

A year later I can say with complete sincerity, Thanks, Mitch, Larry, Judy, Steve, and Rob for all you did and what you gave back to me....I love you all

Well, it is the 1 year anniversary of our reunion...and all those years of writing color war songs...so in honor of this occasion I give you a rendition of the classic "Dirty Water" by the Standells.

I'm gonna tell you a story
I'm gonna tell you a story about our place
I'm gonna tell you a big bad story, baby
Aww, it's all about our place
    Yeah, down by the river
Down by the banks of the swimmin' hole
    (Aw that's what's happenin' baby)
    That's where you'll find us
along with counselors, campers & friends
    (aw but they're cool people)
Well we love that orange water,
    Oh Makowsky's you're our home
(oh you're the number one place)
    Saturday night in the Casino
    (I mean Saturday)
Has to start by 12 o'clock
    (oh, that's a shame)
But I'm wishin' and hopin, oh
That just once those doors weren't locked
(the kids get to peek through)
Well we love that orange water
    Oh Makowsky's you're our home
Because we love that orange water
    Makowsky's you're our home
Oh, oh Makowsky's you're our home
Well we love that orange water
    (come on, come on)

Don't know what came over me, but I felt I had to do it...

    Happy Anniversary Everyone!!

Greetings Everyone. I may never post but I do check from time to time to see what y'all are up to (am I becoming a southerner or what?). It is indeed hard to believe a year has passed since the big event. Harder yet for me to believe is that both Michael W. and I passed the big 5-0 since we all last met! Where has it gone? We should all be hanging in the luncheonette listening to 45s, playing pinball, shooting pool, checking out the girls, getting ready for the Tuesday night bus, drinking egg creams (U-Bets syrup of course), waiting for our Dads to show up on Friday evening and everything else that made Makowsky's so magical.

Hoping you are all well....Glenn F.

I found this on the internet:

Why Do They Call it an Egg Cream?
    By: Tony the Tour Guy
    tonythetourguy@yahoo.com

It isn't made with eggs, or cream. This famous soda fountain concoction was a favorite for many of us, and is currently enjoying a comeback in many restaurants and diners. A mixture of milk, syrup and seltzer water, just how it got its name is one of those things nobody seems to know for sure. But recently a friend gave me a copy of the 1983 edition of NYC ACCESS, which attempts to explain the drink's origins.
According to NYCA, the original egg cream was produced in Manhattan. The syrup which was used was made with eggs, and cream was used to give it a richer taste. Later milk and regular syrup were employed, but the name was kept. However, recently I discussed the matter with a Bronx native who recalls getting a drink with the same name that had egg whites added to make it more frothy. If any of you wish to share your own experiences with this beverage, please feel free.

The egg and cream issues aside, most locals agree that traditional New York egg creams were made by placing a small amount of chocolate or vanilla syrup at the bottom of a tall glass. To this was added a few ounces of very cold milk. Just like a properly-poured pint of Guinness, there was a certain art in the preparation of a good egg cream. A good "soda jerk," as fountain counter servers were frequently called, would first inject a brief spurt of seltzer straight down into the syrup in order to cause it to mix with the milk. They would then fill it to the top by directing the stream against the side of the glass, to avoid creating too much foam.

As soda fountains and ice cream parlors disappeared, true egg creams became harder and harder to find. Some of us tried making our own, but unless you could get real seltzer water delivered to your home, the results were usually rather lame. I am happy to report, however, that more and more restaurants around town are again offering the real thing. At one place I visited the waitress actually brought the siphon bottle to our table.

    Shari

You got me thinking (which is always dangerous)

I found that same article about egg creams, but I also found one which could solve the actual derivation of the name.

    1. Louis Auster has been credited with the invention of the egg cream when it contained both eggs and cream. However, he may have changed the formula eliminating the eggs and cream but keeping the same name.

    2. Auster was Jewish, as were most of his customers at the time the Egg Cream was invented. It is possible that the Egg Cream is actually a Yiddish name or phrase that has been Americanized. The Yiddish word for "Pure" is "Ekt" and "Keem" is Yiddish for sweetness. This would have made "Ekt Keem" or "Pure Sweetness" the original name and simply evolved into Egg Cream.

    3. The most likely theory was that in Brooklyn they used to order "A" cream" This makes alot of sense. An "A" cream sounds alot like "egg cream" and the best soda fountain drink was usually its chocalate drink (its "A" list drink)

I used to frequent a place on Bell Blvd in Bayside in the late '70's & early '80's that was called "The Creamy Egg Cream". It too is gone now but I loved it.

In any event, I agree with Glenn, it had to be Fox's U-Bet Chocolate Syrup.....

    Hi Mitch,

I LOVED your article regarding the Egg Cream story! An egg cream is "pure sweetness". Can you still find U-Bet Chocolate Syrup?

  • At 7/16/2007 9:06 AM , Blogger Jodi said...

You can still find u-bet syrup. They even make a vanilla one. So glad to see my friend Glenn this morning. I know you are all out there reading, please say hi....In New Paltz this weekend. One of the few places I know of where you can still buy tied-dyed tees in a store where they burn incense. Very cool, got to see some OLD friends as well.

OK, how many of you were thinking about the reunion this weekend, raise your hands :)

Speaking of egg creams my sons drink them with me. Yes U-Bet is still around making chocolate and vanilla syrup and the recipe for an egg cream is right on the back. A few years ago a Canadian friend of mine who just passed away at 82 came to visit and I taught him about New York's Egg Creams. He couldn't find the vanilla syrup in Canada and I had bought him a few bottles to take back with him when he came to visit. He never made it. That's why we should enjoy and live every day as if it is out last.

    OK , here's my Barista's outlook:

Egg Cream can be likened to as follows: When you make the merenque for a Key Lime pie or other similar dessert, before the merengue hardens it is like a foamy frothy 'nectar' . Merenque is made from egg whites, milk & sugar then mixed or whipped and aerated (similar to a cappuccino). MY Point ?

Egg Cream was just a expression .

I put the milk in first so the the chocolate is easier to stir up and doesn't stick as much to the bottom. Skim milk just doesn't cut it .
The trick to a good cream head is: use a long handle soda spoon , when stirring use a upward circular motion (this is obscene) By doing so you help raise the gas from the seltzer, therby aerating the milk to foam more ....PHEW!

Enough of this . let's drink one

Fantastic all this egg cream talk. I was just back in NY and ended my visit with a tuna on a roll and a chocolate egg cream in a ....Diner!!! That was great. But I never have to miss U-Bet syrup. I've been a fan since the 1960's. I never ate, but drank lots of chocolate milk.
With almost every visit, I take at least 5 bottles back to Holland. I've made egg creams for friends and family here, most of them think it's a strange drink, but there are a couple of dare devils. You should hear some of their comments over bagels. And I bring back real NY Ess-a-Bagels. Comments such as..."ooooh the bread is too hard and it's so heavy, I can only eat a half...", paper weight, etc. I get so insulted, but logically I know that it's a NY thing and I stay proud.
Well, I'm glad that the blog is getting busier, welcome back and to everyone...enjoy the summer!!!

Try Cranfield's diet (yes, diet) chocolate fudge soda. Tastes just like an egg cream. In the south you can find them at Liquor Barn or Kroger. If you don't think it tastes just like one, I'll bet its the closest thing you find if you are no longer living in NY.

I have had that, not exactly a lunchonette egg cream. I loved the chocolate ones, but would switch every now and then to vanilla.

Ok, picture this...sitting at the counter eating Shelley's tuna with a chocolate egg cream. Tell me has any tuna fish ever tasted better?????

You know who also made great tuna, Lou Dubofsky. Helene and I were friends all through the year, and whenever I came to their house, Lou would make it will tons of veggies in it. Could never get it the same...Wonder why that is, you can do things exactly the same, but the original is always better.

Shelley's tuna was the best!! I think his secret was in the tiny, little diced green peppers and the mayo. To this day, I try to make his tuna. Try, I say.
Yes Shari, I have been to the van Gogh museum and I live close to one of the places he's lived and lots of paintings he's done have been done from the neighborhood. It's one of my tourist attractions (when i get visitors). Water mills and sunflower feilds.
By the way, I haven't touched my candy bag yet. Teeth can't take the sugar anymore, you think it's still good?

Mine was a mini-sundae...35 cents if I remember...Cherry vanilla with cherry syrup, wet walnuts, and of course whipped cream. My mom used to call them frappes. She always had coffee ic w/ hot fudge and she always had seltzer. Usually on a Friday night after the movie. Funny, the things you remember.

Has anyone ever seen that sandwich anywhere else, the roast pork/gb??

    Mindy,

Mindy, your neighborhood sounds just beautiful, especially the sunflower fields. What brought you to Holland?

My dad didn't like us to eat too many sweets; my mom, my sister, Lori, and I would sneak and get mini sundaes when he left on Sunday night. What he didn't know...

It is not only skim milk that doesn't work with an egg cream, Rob. You don't want to try it with soy milk. My two year old is allergic to milk and I tried to give her a little treat. She hated it, so did my husband... So, forget the soy.

What did these ladies miss in the candy bag, Rob?

Food is a major topic because it stimulates all our major senses. and offers immediate gratification to our cravings. How about this:

What is your 1st reaction when you smell someone else's barbque or when yor're in NYC and smell the sweet peanuts roasting , or the smell of coffee brewing..WE WANT SOME....Problem is I want them all.....LOL

How many bacon egg and cheese sandwiches do you need before your first heart attack? But Mrs Streeter( no Mom had a first name to me then)scrambled eggs on a fresh onion roll from the grocery was the best!
Van Gogh Museum is awesome i was there when it first opened in 73 and 1/2 full, and then again in 89. i always have a hand made painting i bought outside from a woman artist of the canals

Besides missing NYC pizza more than anything (the worst NYC pizza is nectar compared to the crap that passes for pizza in Atlanta), an egg on a roll is impossible to find in Georgia. The norm down here are biscuits. They seem to love em but I find they are crumbly, tasteless wastes of the pallette.

    Memory lane

One tuesday night a few of us went to see Midnight Cowboy . Well, against all my mothers wishes (and threats) I went anyway. I forgot what was playing at the other theatre at the time, probably something lame. Even though it was a great movie it had some provocative scenes for that era in hollywood. I don't think they had a rating guide in those days.

Needless to say I was busted by my Mom and grounded for 2 consecutive tuesdays. Bummer

    Rob,
A similar memory, "the mothers" (and you know who they are/were) did not want us to see "Romeo& Juliet" and if I recall, they actually almost cancelled the bus over that movie, girls I'm sure you remember - it was a huge issue for the colony that night. But the funniest of all was when the "mothers" went to the movies on Tuesday night to be sure we didn't see "Summer of 42", which of course we did - BUSTED...

I don't remember not being allowed to see R & J, but I know we couldn't see the Detective or Rosemary's Baby. That meant we had to go to BOWLING.

Rob, if I remember correctly those Tuesdays you couldn't go on the bus weren't a total bust...didn't you help someone babysit????? :)

I guess those movies seemed pretty risque at the time, but compared to now, they were like Disney.

    Hello all,
As far as Romeo and Juliet,
"It was in the restaurant they met...Romeo and Juliet..He had no money to pay the debt...so Rome, owed what Juli,et. Whatever, I remember that from Makowskiy days.
Anyway talk about "risque" movies, The first movie I ever saw by myself was The Harrod Experiment, I read the book, and experienced on film ,oh maybe pages 150-156ish.
That was very R rated for my 16 year old days. And no. not like Rob I never got caught. Had My fake ID that got me entre.

If Steven Augen is correct, he was my date for R & J. Glenn, I believe it was your brother's birthday this week..If I'm right, please wish him a happy for me.

Last week (7/20/69) was the 38th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing. OK, who was in the Fleiss's kitchen watching with me????

I was in the Fleiss bungalow watching the moon landing - boy was it crowded in there, wasn't Shari sitting on the refrigerator and I think she fell off --- am I remembering correctly?

I was in the Fleiss bungalow during the moon landing. I think the rabbit ears had 2 feet of tin foil wrapped around them. It was amazing .

BTW, has anyone ever delved into the conspiracy theory that the landing was 'staged'. I have the video clip of it. I could email it to you.

Question- If you watch the NASA released moon film clips it shows an american flag waving . This is impossible , it cannot physically occur.

I know there were people everywhere in that bungalow, maybe Shari was on the fridge, but I don't remember her falling. I do remember, and I've talked about it before, playing kissing games in the bedroom before. Who knows, maybe I was imagining it.

OK, another group question...who watched the final episode of the Fugitive in front of the Main house???

I hope I'm finally good to go. Yes Jody, i can't forget the R&J movie date, you wailed so loud, everyone stared at us. But wasn't it the seating together on the bus that made those dates so much fun. Back to egg creams, my grandmother made the only perfect egg cream not made in a coca cola glass. i miss the blue colored soda bottles that now sell as antiques. When it was an egg cream she had can's of chocolate cows, thick metal cans, ice cold, 10 times better then YoHoo or any choc. milk EVER

What about 'Boys in the band' ? Bannned and Scorned by the "Mothers club of Makowsky's' ?

Very controversial movie for it's day. Strange how it was ok to see The Green Berets that same summer, as The Duke whipped the VC , but, NOT OK to see a movie of true to life human conditions and relationships.

Our generation of parents I truly believe are different. The 'shields' we place in our childrens paths have changed , but "The Song Remains the Same".

    As Dennis Miller says:

"This is just one man's opinion..... I might be wrong"

Speaking as someone who doesn't have kids (so what do I know), but they know too much. There is no mystery anymore. Curiousity is quenched way to early for me.

"Spin the bottle" and "7 minutes in heaven" mean nothing to todays teens, they probably laugh at the idea of it. I wonder if there are still "first Kisses" and special Firsts. Wow, I sound like an old fart. It was nice, I'm glad I had them, I'm even happier I can still remember them.

No, A little mystery wouldn't hurt at all.

I was surprised to hear that there was a reunion last year. I wish I would have know. My sister, Wendy and I would have definetly gone. If you are planning another one please let me know.

Sorry it took me so long to read all of this and give a yell back. I've spent every weekend upstate at Makowsky's as I have every year since my return in 1980 with my family. I had a wonderful time last year at the reunion. It was so nice to see everyone.
Larry, I'm so glad that the reunion brought so much happiness. A couple of weeks ago Judy, Sharon, and Andrea came by for a visit. I wish I had know they were coming, and spend more time with them.
So how about the rest of you? There are a few weeks left for the summer. Come up for a visit! Love to all, Arlene

Each summer around this time we'd be knee deep in show rehearsals . Most of the time I'd prefer playing tennis , but in retrospect being in these shows were really cool.

I bet most of you still recall some of your lines or words to the songs. Thank you Hy Ozer.

Like my old friend Bobby L (Nicely) used to say " I dreamed last night I was on the boat to heaven , and by some chance I had brought my Dice along" OK guys finish the verse.....

I loved those shows. I was Auntie Em to Debbie's Dorothy, but I never made it on stage, just shouted from the dressing room "come Home Dorothy, Come Home...But August was also Color War and if I remember correctly, Carnival. Ok, who out there owes me alimony, I know I married a few of you there...does anyone have a pic of the go-go booth. I believe it was me and Hilary. I loved bobbing for apples...what other booths did we have??????????

And I was Anna's son in the King and I (my brother was one of the sons of the king). My one onstage appearance (also the stage manager for Oklahoma).

I'm in that it's-almost-the-end-of-summer-depressed-mood and reading today has really cheered me up. LeeG- how are you? Haven't seen you since we were both still in Canarsie! Do you live in Jersey now? I'm still in Brooklyn- can't seem to leave!
Hope everyone is well. I think I need an egg cream right about now.

    Bobby,

Guys & Dolls is one of my all time favorites--I have an old recording of the original cast. --not quite as good as Makowsky's but not bad--

Robert Alda was Sky on Broadway, Marlon Brando in the film--interestingly, I saw Ewan McGregor as Sky in a recent London production. Very different from the original.

Sky does not sing most of the songs. Was that a trick question--he does not sing Guys and Dolls nor Sit Down Your Rockin the Boat, and a number of others. Nicely actually has more songs than Sky.

Bobby (welcome home) just talking about when we were on the elevator and recognized eachother at the reunion. I know Lenny was Nathan, Hillary was Adelaide, but can't remember the others. I do know Rob had that line about "Craps".

Thanks Jodi , unfortnately, you're not the 1st to tell me this....LOL

(AKA Robert Deniro - Taxi Driver,
Yes , I'm talking to you)

Good question, Bobby you got me stumped. I forgot his name, he was a tall kid with dark hair. Mark or Michael Something?

Today would have been one of those days when we got our heat from those old stoves. Can you imagine, heating an old wooden bungalow with the flame from an old stove??? Hard to believe we survived :). Remember we all had one or two winter things for days like this. Remember those old movies we would have to watch in the casino on a real ugly rainy day. those old red boots (i couldn't spell galloshes??????). Remember when those were the only realities........how lucky we were.
Reality is different now, but we are still together in it, i guess we are still pretty lucky.......

It's funny, sitting in my office today I was thinking about "these kind of days in Makowsky's", as I have many times over the years - walking outside, attempting shorts anyway, going right back in the bungalow to change to the only warm outfit you had and hated! I did enjoy making those ceramic ash trays - my mother had them all over the house, but if you made them in camp today, the counselor would probably be arrested! As bad as those movies were in the casino when we were campers, and they were bad -- they were 1000 times worse when you were a counselor!

I hated the thought of leaving our paradise & going back to school, plus the summer romance was still 'evolving'.

You really are Rob, but I love that about you. Oh boy I yearn for the days when my biggest decision was Fudgecicle or Blue Ices. When the worst thing in life was not having a date for the Friday night movies.

For all who hated packing to come up in June it was 10 times worse packing to go home. How dare our mothers ask us to give up even 5 seconds of our precious time together. We tried to burn eachothers images into our brains, because it seemed like forever until we would be together again.

Stephie has some pictures of a Labor Day Sunday, all of us hanging together until the last minute. (I'm not in those pics, because I had my first HANGOVER)..Not a pretty site...Oh well another first..Obviously bored at work today, but those memories are pretty clear.

Remember the ride home, not like the ride there. I do remember being in the car and coming up to the Main House, every year Pauline, Milton and Frieda would be there and the words are clear...Live and be well we will all be together next summer........

It seems we had less to bring home each summer. Lost , outgrown & worn out clothes ,stuff my mom chose to leave there for the next summer.

The Plug was finally pulled on the Juke box and the pinball games were silent.

I think Milton & Frieda we thrilled to have everyone leave.

BTW , If you can see the colony in the autumn or winter ...it's lovely
