Judy and I try to go up to the Mohonk every year. It's still so beautiful up there. However, the labyrinth and the lemon squeeze are memories. (the mind is still willing be the knees are weak!)

Do you recall a place on the mtn. on the way to the Tower that we stopped for lunch and a rest.

I remember 1 summer we were 'escorted' out of the Hotel. Milton and whoever had a car had to pick us up at the entrance by the golf course. We got several 'lectures' about that one.

We were banned from there the rest of the summer.

I don't think it had a name. It's just a luncheonette for the day visitors and it is still open and the food is good. It is right after the first part of the hike, just at the beginning of the hotel grounds.

Well, well Steve Bier, welcome . How are you? I was wondering when you'd appear.

Yes, the 'Smiley Mohonk' as we knew it was not so jew-friendly. Since then the place has been sold . Not sure who. I do recall a great candy shoppe with every flavor swizzle sticks.

Many colony people played golf there. In fact ....I can see Jeff Kaye wearing his plaid pants with black and white golf saddle shoes and a striped Arnold Palmer style shirt...What a vision.

    Hi Paige,
Those were beautiful words you said about your grandfather. Although I haven't seen the family in years, I remember his smile and how wonderful he was to our family. We were all happy that he was a part of our lives. We will all miss him. Robin

Milton was a true pillar of steel. Probably the only man I ever put on equal footing with my personal pillar, my Dad. I'm sure most of you remember him, bring up tons of bagels and several summers he was the only man besides Uncle Miltie there all summer when he worked in Monty. Milty was a living legend ruling over his Kingdom, fair but tough. He belonged on the Supreme Court. I've spoken to many people over the years who went to other colonies and hotels and never felt the true love that us makowskiites had for our little universe. It was perfect. Thank you Milty for your vision.

Sorry I just came across this site today. As I have some VERY sad news that I am sure you all will be sadend by. This is Ira, Joyce & Shelly's son. My Grandfather Milton passed away yesterday. From What I was told, he was in no pain. He lived a very very very long & full life. I know he would have loved to have been around to see you all. In the last year of his life, he was very reflective & regressed often about the past. We wil all miss him dearly. This & the day my dad passed away are the two sadest days of my life. For all of those that remember me, I turn 40 this year, have been married for 3 plus years to my wife Lauren and have a beautiful baby boy named Ethan. I think I recognize some of you, but probably would know for sure by your last name as well. Hi Judy & Steve. I am sorry if this news offends anyone, but I just thought you would like to know. I just noticed that a few of my cousins have already provided the news I posted above... I guess this family is more alike than we knew.

To Paige and ALL the Family . We are deeeply shocked and saddened by Milton's passing. We all feel a significant loss and will never forget him and your family. I'd like to personally dedicate much of what we're doing here to him . I'm sure everyone shares my feeling.

I want to extend my condolences to the entire Makowsky family. Just reading all these comments shows how much he meant to all of us. Sandy recently emailed me and told me of how she would print the "blog comments" and bring them over to Milton. He would smile and was at times overcome with emotion at what us "Makowskians" had to say. I truly believe that we have all come together again for a reason. Milton Makowsky wanted to say goodbye to all of us, and we will certainly celebrate his life at our upcoming reunion.

I don't know why everyone thinks that it was always so wonderful at Makowsky's. It wasn't!!!

    Sometimes it RAINED!!!

Sometimes when it rained the colony would flood and we had to squish our way around. I Remember Hy Ozer had these Rubbers (galoishes) he wore , they were like firemen boots. Also he would spin his keys/whistle on his lanyard like a policemans' nightstick.

Hey do you remember 1 summer Joe Streeter bartered with Milton and gave him his old car. Milton used it as his 'truck' for yrs and drove it everywhere.

Rain was great! It meant money for pinball and egg creams and sundaes. We would play a ton of pinball and jimmied the back and set game for lots of free games. Also the luncheonette waspacked with kids playing cards, Pinocle(Sonny Levine could always put 4 Aces on the bottom of the deck) and Gin Rummy like all the Dad's played. Also, arts and crafts in camphouse. Any old lainyards out there!

    Rob,
If my memory is still functioning the saga of Joes car went like this:

For some reason the car was by the garbage dump and it got stuck. Two other cars got stuck trying to get him out. Milton finally got him out but then they realized that the transmission was going bad. Joe got so made that he sold the car for a bottle of booze.
If I'm wrong it's still a good story.

Bernie, It's been a long time. Didn't you bowl at Rainbow Lanes? I tried to bowl again but all the liniment in the world couldn't make me feel better. After my back straightened out I had to go looking for my arm.

Softball...Bowling... Now were talkin! I remember the camp trips to the alleys at New Paltz & Rosendale. The best was passing by the mushroom caves on a hot hazy day... Instant AC! I'm glad to say I bowl much better today than I did then. To bad your body won't allow it Steve... I would have loved to bowl a few games with ya. I entered a league last year, after a 10 year hiatus, & finished with a 202, my highest ending avg. ever. I still remember the first time I hit it into the woods on a fly, I was 15... I think that ball is still going (LOL). It came off my uncle Alan Markowitz, he got ahead of me 0-2 throwing heat... The next pitch was another fastball that I deposited into the left/centerfield gap right over the bush that was at the base of the trees. I remember the look on his face as he watched that ball sail into the trees... For me, it signified a changing of the guard. After camp ceased operating, some of my fondest memories were on that baseball field... My field of dreams. Even when I played college ball, I never enjoyed it as much as I did @ Makowsky's... Even with all the pot holes down the third base line that made the ball go in sorts of directions the last minute.
I would like you all to know, My Aunt Sandy used many quotes from this blog in her eulogy to my Grandfather Milton. My family & I appreciate all the kind gestures. Thank You!
By the way, I've noticed a few of my old counselors on here... Any stories to share with me, about me, that are not to embarrassing?

There used to be a man ....his name was Ditchek (or something like that) Well he used to collect the trash in those pails beside our bungalow. Whenerver he saw my mother he would tell her in his broken English that " she had cleanest garbage in whole colony" LOL

    Rob,

Ira , I remember his land . He had goats or chickens or some kind of critters. He also had this wierd moustache.

Hey Bernie , glad I wasn't with you for that one. My parents thought you were a responsible counselor......I want my tip back...ha ha

You should try that road in winter. It's hairy . Ask Bobby, he lived on the Mtn while @ SUNY New Paltz.
