We have discussed so many topics on this blog, but I do not remember exploring this one. I love movies and The Godfather I & II are at the top of my list along with a couple of Quentin Tarrantino movies. A Few Good Men has always been a favorite of mine as well. If I keep going on I'll leave none for all of you.

I could watch Steel Magnolias over and over. Such a girls movie.

The only movie I saw nominated this year is Michael Clayton. If you haven't seen it, do so. Great story, and ladies George is one of a kind.

I love the movie Dirty Dancing
(1987) with Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze. It takes place in the Catskills in 1963 and it reminds me of the good old days.

The better bungalow movie is "A Walk on the Moon". If anyone hasn't seen that, do so, It will bring you right back to that time. You can even see a resembalence of the blouse man to Jack Schwartz...Ok, maybe I'm exagerating a little :)

Dirty Dancing & A Walk on the Moon are definitely flicks we can all relate to. In the latter, there are two scenes that really bring me back. The first one is a little quirkey and might go unnoticed. When walking past the general store there is a sign in the window that says, "On sale, Kentilopes 2 cents."
The other is when the grandmother is talking to her grandaughter in the kitchen about her becoming a woman and her grandson is present. Tovah Feldshuh, blurts out, "Go to your room!" The grandson says defiantly, " I can't, this is my room!" Guess who also slept in the kitchen in Bungalow 41.

There are many great movies on my top list. The 'Godfather' 1&2; 'French Connection' 1&2, Stalag 17, 'Animal House' and 'Stripes' to name a few. One of the most hysterical movies I have seen in a while is 'Let's Go To Prison'. A true laugher. A future cult classic.

Dirty Dancing has to be a Makowsky's Friday Night Theater flick.

'A Walk On The Moon' is a good flick. Another Friday Night classic. Meat tenderizer on wasp bites? What is he? A pot roast?

I asked my mother if there were any "blouse men" like Viggo Mortenson at Makowsky's--she just laughed and said absolutely not.

Probably a guy's thing but I especially like Godfathers I and II, Top Gun, An Officer and a Gentlemen, Great Escape, Star Wars, Schindler's List, A Few Good Men (you can't handle the truth), The Sting,ShawShank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, To Kill a Mockingbird, A Clockwork Orange, 2001, Monty Python.

Big in my house full of women--The Way We Were, An American President, Annie Hall, Casablanca, Pretty Woman, When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, (Officer and a Gentleman high on this list too).

For those of you who have not seen them, there are 3 very good but bloody movies out there worth seeing--No Country for Old Men, There Will be Blood, In Bruges.

The nearest thing to a 'Blouse man' was Ellen's Dad Jack. He was a traveling salesman (shmatahs, actually he carried several good lines - 'Charlies girls , Juniorite, von furstenberg & others) Each summer he's sell his 'line' of samples on the colony to make room for next season. He's set up racks for the women and the bungalow 'rocked'.

You could be sure they went to Skytop for dinner that night. LOL

Jack was great , I can see him now with his cigar and clipboard. No , not quite the 'blouseman' , and he for sure did'nt go to woodstock, but was still part of a summer ritual.

Diane Lane was hot in that Flick. A real summer Milf. Sorry ladies , pardon my middle-aged hormones, ha , but I like her

Here is another classic... Not for content. Only the location of many scenes make it worth mentioning 'The Stuff'. This movie came out in 1985 and had some notable stars such as; Danny Aiello, Michael Moriarity, Paul Sorvino and Garett Morris. The movie is considered to be a cult classic. Many of the scenes were filmed in beautiful downtown Accord. There are other scenes shot in Kingston. It was one of those bad sci-fi films. The premise was about some goo that oozed from the ground. Just thought I would toss in this "horror" of a flick only because it was filmed in scenic Accord. Last time I was in Accord it looked like a set from a cheap western. Basically; it is a ghost town. The ghost of Mr. Barley still lurks about! Probably in his usual drunkedness too. I just remember his store was always dark. He sold candy, beer(the official water of Accord)bullets and papers on the weekends.

Dirty Dancing and Walk on the Moon... classic Makowskys - There was no blouse man, but we did have Judy Gold who sold Hukapoos and Wayne Rogers, I had soooooo many of them, shared them with my sister and my mother - when I was little, I remember there was a jelly apple man, yes? Ellen, didn't your dad have clothes too?
Jodi - Steel Magnolias was always too sad for me - I have seen Pretty Woman, When Harry Met Sally, Working Girl and Officer and a Gentleman about a gazillion times and don't ask me why, but I was on a kick way, way back and saw One Flew over the Cookoo's Nest about 30 times - have no clue as to why....

    Hi Nona,

I remember hearing the word Hukapoo; what is a Hukapoo?

I also remember a man with glasses who sold clothes from the back of his trunk. He would often park on the lawn. At the time, I remember thinking that his clothes were high fashion, with a New York flair. He had cool jeans and tops with lots of wild 70's prints. I remember the ladies going wild when he came. Some of the moms would put it into high gear when the word got out that he had arrived.

    Is this memory accurate?

    Hi Shari,
Officially, hello - I have seen your posts - nice to see you here.... sorry you didn't find out prior to the reunion - However, you are reminding me that you are younger than me - ha! Hukapoos were man tailored shirts made of stretchy material completely covered with city scapes, scenic stuff, etc.
Hmmm... now that you mention it, I do vaguely remember someone with clothes out of a trunk - what is so great about this blog is that everyone's memory sparks someone elses memory ....

Ah yes Huckapoos....I had a few of those. But there was another manufacturer that I liked even more. They were called Nik Nik...
If I remember they were a little more expensive but had awesome scenes. You had to be "super skinny" to wear those.

...and Nona, yes you did have a thing for "Cuckoos Nest"...and it is ranked #7 on IMDB's all time list. Jack Nicholson as R.P. McMurphy...who could forget Louise Fletcher as Nurse Ratched...a very young Danny DeVito and Christopher Lloyed before their Taxi days.

Hi Nona, Thanks for remembering that I am younger. ;-) My family has been packing to move for the last month. I feel every bit of my age at this moment. We moved 145 boxes (my step son counted) yesterday and I had to sleep on an ice pack last night. I was sounding quite old when I lifted each box with an "OUY". I think that moving is like childbirth; you quickly forget how painful it is...

Does anyone else remember the man who sold clothing from his trunk?

I'm not sure if they are the same, but Ginger Brown (Greg & Laurie Brown's Mother) always had her car parked on the side of the pool by the handball courts with the trunk open & a rack across the back seat of the car. Maybe the man was her husband. They have a house on the way up to the colony on the left hand side of Rock Hill Road near that other littl colony is, was...

Hucka poo , nik nik , oy vey, Made from all synthetic single knit fabrics. Lapels like elephant ears and strategicaly placed buttons so your massive chai & chains to show through ....ha ha

Double Polyester leisure suits , made to stretch in all directions to accommodate any man's 'package' . Waist length matching jackets , also with mega - lapels . They smelled awful , especially when wet , but toss them into the washer / dryer and ready to wear...

Greg and Lori Brown's Dad was a record producer and recording engineer who produced and recorded the Sal-Soul Orchestra. I do not think it was him(Greg and Lori lived around the corner from me in Brooklyn). I remember and I'm going to say that I am 99% sure that Scott Shapiro's Mom, Audrey, sold the Huckapoo shirts. To me those things looked like a bad day at a bowling alley. No. More like a day in 1970's Bensonhurst and John Travolta is walking down 86th Street with a can of paint. The only other thing worse than Huckapoo shirts are the famous Leisure Suits! There was a guy with big Ford Galaxy that would pull up to the Superette with the racks in the car. He wore glasses and looked like Larry "Bud" Melman. He may have been chummy with Milton. When ever that guy came around, Milton would make the announcement and the ladies went running. I'm still going with Scott's Mom as the Huckapoo peddler. BTW; I never wore a Huckapoo shirt. Oh, my hair! I worked so long on my hair and you had to hit it!

That guy might have been Joe Streeter. All our mothers had some clothes from Joe. My Aunt who died at 97 was still wearing some of Joe's clothes that my mom gave her.

I had a bunch of those old Huck-a-poos. We thought we were so stylish. But what did we know. We also used to wear white cream eye shadow and to really dress up we wore the blue. So ladies, you think that look will ever come back???

  • At 2/25/2008 6:34 PM , Blogger Ira L. said...

Ok, I went straight to my source, my mom of course, & she said it was Judy Gold's father & Judy who sold the clothes.

I always say "never say never". I would not be surprised if the days of blue eye shadow come back. Skinny ties are making a comeback so why not the Mary Quant look! I'll stand corrected on the poo shirts. I was close. I think the Gold's were next to the Shapiro's and the Bier's and one of them had a little sign about selling the shirts. That someone has to be Judy Gold.

Hey you all. Haven't been here for a while. Good to see some fun photos and posts.
    Yeah I loved Michael Clayton.
The Piaf movie was great too. Last years noms seemed better (Syriana, Venus, Departed).
Of course Amy Winehouse at the grammys tops all!
