Because if he says "Hutt 3" they would never get the snap off. They would be stuck with the unabridged version (lol)

Yes Gregg this is now reserved for football!

My son, Jason and I are now officially in "pregame" mode. The dawn of a new football season is always anticipated in this house. My daughter is back at school in Maryland and I made sure to hang up an artifact which supports our "G-Men, Big Blue, Maramen, Blue Wall, and of course my favorite moniker The Big Blue Wrecking Crew"...otherwise known as the New York Football Giants. I want to curb my enthusiasm ( I also love that show )because this team has very high expectations, so I wish for them a healthy season. Go Tiki, Eli, Jeremy, Michael, Lavar and the rest...I'm hoping that this season which coincidently is the 20th anniversary of the Giants 1st Super Bowl victory in 1986 will evoke memories of Simms, Morris, LT, Banks, and Bavaro.

And dad if you are listening up there you can be sure that this season they will "throw the g-d damn ball"

Don't despair...the Dolphins should be very good this year. I think Nick Saben is a great coach. Playing the defending Super Bowl champions on the road opening night is a very tall order for any team.

As a diehard Giant fan I will be rooting for Big Blue when I attend the Brothers Peyton Bowl tonight at Giant Stadium. My late father Dave always took me to the Giant games when they played at Yankee Stadium.

If I close my eyes, I can still see Y A Title faking a hand off to Alex Webster with Rosie Brown blocking, and then pitching out to Frank Gifford on the end around.

As the Eagles converge on Gifford, he stops and throws a pass deep down field to a wide open Del Shofner.

Kyle Rote comes over throws a block downfield and Shofner walks into the end zone. Touchdown Giants.

On defense, it was Big and Little Mo, Sam Huff, Jim Katcavege, Jimmy Patton and Spider Lockhart. These were the core guys in protecting any lead or getting back the ball back for us.

And in later years we stood around the water cooler discussing the pro's and con's of Howard Cossell telling it like it was? That comment that caused all the stir about "the Little Monkey?"

To me, I always thought of Stevie with love when he said it.

Seasons come and seasons go, but the memories of those wonderful times with family and friends makes opening day that more special.

Whoever you root for, may all your hopes and dreams come true.

As for my little Stevie I never forgot that somehow he wound up rooting for the Washington Redskins.

How did that happen you ask? Losing every Color War with me as his General can have that affect on a person!

    LOL

Are we ready for some football! You bet we are!

Good Luck To All and especially you long suffering J E T S fans.

With the new management in place, it appears that they're FINALLY on the right track. Give them your support and patience. They are a young team who will only get better with time.

    Enjoy the game!

I grew up on all those Giants in the late 50's & early 60's...You didn't mention ole #81 Andy Robustelli (I know just an oversight...he was terrific) They were my heroes. In those days if you didn't go to Yankee Stadium ....it was not shown to the public because of the "Blackout rules" I listened to those games on the radio with Marty Glickman doing the play by play.

Rob... LT was the best Giant of all time...and he was a pleasure to watch. But my all time favorite Giants are Fran Tarkenton and Mark Bavaro. Bavaro left it all on the field every time he played.

  • At 9/12/2006 1:07 PM , Blogger Bob Hutt said...

Mitch when you mentioned the Scrambler Old Fran Tarkenton I couldn't help but laugh remembering his dippy batterymate Homer Jones. It was like playing in the schoolyard. Fran would be running for his life from sideline to sideline while Homer Jones never knew a single play in the the playbook. He just ran where ever he wanted cutting back here and there until he was open. And when Fran saw him break free he threw him the damn ball. Take that Keyshawn. And yes Andy Robo was one of the best. I could recite that entire Giant team, time permitting.

    LOL

"Fran the Scram" would always say, that he could "never" overthrow #45 Homer Jones. I'm not sure, but I think Homer was the absolute first NFL player to "spike" the ball when he crossed the goaline.

  • At 9/12/2006 2:57 PM , Blogger Bob Hutt said...

Mitch you are so correct about Homer Jones. I did not know that he was the first to spike the football celebrating a touchdown. I do know that he was as fast as a speeding bullet and about as smart remembering the playbook. LOL

Here is what I was able to uncover about good old number 45...

    Homer Jones (football player)

Homer Jones (February 18, 1941 in Houston, Texas) is a former football wide receiver, who played for the National Football League's New York Giants from 1964 to 1969, and for the Cleveland Browns in 1970.

Six-foot-two and weighing 220 pounds, Jones was a cousin of Hall of Fame receiver Charley Taylor of the Washington Redskins and Browns' defensive end Joe Jones.

Jones attended Texas Southern College (now Texas Southern University), a historically black college, and starred in track and field as well as football, running the 100-yard and 220-yard dashes.

He was drafted in 1963 by his hometown team, the Houston Oilers of the American Football League, but suffered a knee injury in training camp and was cut. Also cut by the Oilers that day was cornerback Willie Brown, who would later play for the Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders and make the Hall of Fame, making this one of several moves that turned the Oilers from one of the AFL's better teams in the early 1960s to one of the National Football League's worst by the time of the 1970 NFL-AFL merger.

The Giants offered Jones a bus ticket to New York and payment for knee surgery. Known as "Rhino" to his teammates, he wore uniform number 45 in New York.

Having seen players such as Giant teammate Frank Gifford and Green Bay Packers star Paul Hornung celebrate touchdowns by throwing the ball to fans in the stands, Jones decided to come up with his OWN post-touchdown maneuver.

In a 1965 game, he scored a touchdown and threw the football down hard into the end zone. He called the move a "spike," and modern post-touchdown celebrations, including "touchdown dances," are said to have evolved from Jones' invention of spiking the ball.

In 1967, Jones had his best season, catches 49 passes for 1,209 yards, an average of 24.7 yards per catch, and 13 touchdowns, leading the NFL in receiving touchdowns. He was second in the league in combined rushing and receiving yards from scrimmage behind Leroy Kelly of the Browns. He made the NFL's Pro Bowl that season and the next.

In January 1970, Jones was traded to the Browns in exchange for running back Ron Johnson and veteran defensive lineman Jim Kanicki. The Browns were in the market for a new wide receiver after having traded all-pro Paul Warfield to the Miami Dolphins.

In the team's first game of the 1970 NFL season on September 21, 1970 Cleveland Municipal Stadium, Jones returned the second-half kickoff against the New York Jets and returned it for a touchdown, a key play in the Browns' 31-20 win over the Jets in front of 85,703 fans. The crowd, officially the largest crowd in Browns' history, was a part of NFL history that evening in the first game ever played on ABC's Monday Night Football.

However, that touchdown would be the highlight of his one season with the Browns as knee injuries soon caught up with Jones. Soon after being traded to the St. Louis Cardinals (football) in July 1971, he was forced to retire at age 29.

Jones finished his career with 224 receptions for 4,986 yards, an average of 22.3 yards per catch [NFL Record, minimum 200 career receptions], and 37 touchdowns (36 receiving, 1 rushing).

The Giants were "Dead in the Water" yesterday...

What a win....This team didn't quit when many would have...

Absolutely stole this game and the Giants can be assured now that they have their QB of the future.

Mitch reading between the lines of your post we both know the Giants stole one from the Eagles yesterday. Eli was sacked 8 times and if not for some strange conservative play calling from the Philadelphia coaching staff we would not be celebrating and would be 0 -2 today.

But as I watched yesterday my mind raced back to another time and place. We certainly snatched victory from the jaws of defeat yesterday but as they say paybacks are a bitch. Think back to 1978 and Herman (see ya in KC) Pee Wee Edwards...

Yes, the Miracle of the Meadowlands turns 28!

Fans of the New York Giants had much to lament as their team prepared to play host to the Philadelphia Eagles on Nov. 19, 1978.

After a promising start, the Giants had lost three consecutive road games to fall to 5-6. They had endured five consecutive losing seasons and hadn't been to the playoffs since 1963, the longest such droughts in the history of the ancient franchise.

Herman Edwards' unlikely touchdown helped change fortunes for both teams.

Though it hardly seemed possible, things were about to get markedly worse.

Behind a solid defensive effort, the Giants managed to build a 17-12 lead and were in the process of running out the clock against Philadelphia. Less than a minute remained, precisely 31 seconds, when the team huddled for the last time, the ball at its 29-yard line.

The Eagles were out of timeouts. Relieved fans shuffled toward the exits of Giants Stadium, expecting quarterback Joe Pisarcik to take the snap and dip to one knee.

But offensive coordinator Bob Gibson had other ideas. Hadn't Pisarcik taken a knee on the previous play? And hadn't Eagles middle linebacker Bill Bergey drilled center Jim Clack, knocking him into the quarterback and inciting a tussle?

Gibson wasn't going to let that happen twice. He called a handoff to the fullback. The Giants were horrified when the call came to the huddle. "Don't give me the football," fullback Larry Csonka insisted.

But Gibson had upbraided Pisarcik for changing a play against Washington a week earlier. The quarterback wasn't about to do it again.

Out on the left wing, Giants running back Doug Kotar looked across the line at second-year Eagles cornerback Herman Edwards. "We're practically shaking hands," said Edwards, now head coach of the New York Jets. "We had hardly huddled on defense."

The Giants had spent too much time in the huddle. When they finally got to the line, Clack looked to the play clock and saw it winding down. Fearing a clock-stopping delay-of-game penalty, he snapped the ball.

Unfortunately, Pisarcik was peeking back at Csonka, wondering if the famed fullback had accepted his assignment. The timing was shot. Pisarcik bobbled the snap, then hurriedly attempted to hand off to Csonka, planting the ball on the big man's right hip.

Kotar, who died of brain cancer in 1983, never saw the bounding fumble. But Edwards did. He sped into the backfield and fielded it cleanly. "That was the beautiful part," Edwards said. "It came to me on the first bounce."

As the remaining crowd gaped in stunned silence, Edwards dashed 26 yards into the end zone for the improbable winning touchdown with 20 seconds remaining. Eagles 19, Giants 17.

Among those who missed the play was Philadelphia head coach Dick Vermeil, who had turned away in frustration. "It dawned on him when he noticed people running by him," Edwards said.

"He said, 'What are you doing?' And someone said, 'Herman ran it in for a touchdown!' He never saw it until he watched the tape."

The goofball play became an instant, tragicomic sensation. And the "Miracle of the Meadowlands," as sports fans soon called it, still resonates in Philadelphia and greater New York City.

Dick Vermeil and Herman Edwards reunited on Nov. 11, 2001, when they opposed each other as head coaches at the Meadowlands.

"There are two versions of the story," Edwards said. "One is, 'I was at the game.' And that can't all be true, because there weren't enough people at the game for all the times I've heard it.

The second is, they know where they were. They'll tell you, 'I was in a mall, standing in front of the TV,' or, 'I was in the parking lot. I turned the radio on and heard what happened.' "

Edwards' touchdown had ramifications both immediate and delayed. The Giants fired Gibson the next day. He never worked in football again. Not long after the game, outraged fans burned tickets in a bonfire outside the stadium.

The Giants declined to renew the contract of head coach John McVay after the season. He joined the 49ers' front office in 1979 and became an integral part of that team's budding dynasty.

On the other side, Edwards is convinced the lucky bounce propelled the Eagles to new heights.

"We won the game at the end, and we went on to the playoffs," he explains. "The next thing, we're playing in the Super Bowl [two years later]. You see that in sports. One play gets you feeling like you have confidence. You're not worried about losing anymore; now you're thinking about how you can win."

The Miracle of the Meadowlands had another, longer-lasting effect on the NFL. Watch teams kneel down to kill the clock these days, and you'll almost always notice one player, usually a running back or defensive back, standing 5 to 10 yards behind the quarterback. As Pisarcik, Csonka, and their Giants cohorts learned the hard way, it never hurts to prepare for the worst.

    Yes Bobby!

I absolutely remembered what you called "The Miracle of the Meadowlands" (But that is what Philly fans called it)

I refer to it as "The Incredible Play Call & Fumble" I never was as low as I was that day...as well as the Giants' front office, because as you mentioned they were all canned.

However, when the fans burned their tickets in the parking lot and had a plane fly over the stadium with the banner that read "Sixteen years of lousy football" Wellington Mara took notice and with the help of Pete Rozelle hired a GM who was successful with Baltimore Colts, and later the Miami Dolphins...."one" George Young. He hired Ray Perkins, a disciplinarian which led to Bill Parcells and the rest is history.

They became contenders by 1981 and finally won a Super Bowl in 1986 and 1990.

That black cloud became a silver lining.

Just read in the paper that SNY reporter David Lee and cameraman Christian Peter were greeted with obscenities and flying bagels when they arrived at Philly's Lincoln Field on Sunday. After returning to their SUV following the Giants' win, they found fans had already said goodbye - Philly style. The right side mirror was ripped off, the back wiper was bent, part of the SNY logo was scraped off, one tire had been slashed, and the car had been "washed" with a combination of urine and beer.

Years ago I went to Philly to see a football game and remember how classless the fans were. I see nothing has changed.

All things considered, "I'd rather NOT be in Philadelphia."

Mitch I have heard the same thing from other Giant fans. But the funny thing is as a MET fan I only go to watch them play in Philadelphia at their new ballpark that reminds me of Ebbets Field. And believe me there has never been a problem with the fans at all.

I was a ten year season ticket holder of the METS with 4 seats in the loge behind homeplate up until 1994. Since then I have never again set foot inside Shea Stadium even though the organization offered me FREE seats to some games.

The reason is back in 1994 I received a letter from the attorneys for the METS. It read GOOD NEWS as we are renewing your season seats for this year; HOWEVER, this does not mean that you always have THESE SEATS as the MET MANAGEMENT RESERVES the right to reassign you to OTHER SEATS at the METS MANAGEMENT option.

I replied, that the METS needed the seats more and did not renew. I was at the first game ever played at Shea back in 1964 against the Pirates, a game they lost to Bob Friend, have NOT been back to Shea since 1993.

Apparently many other fans acted the same, but the press never picked up as to why their was such a huge exodus from Shea Stadium that year. Everyone thought it was because of the STRIKE. MET MANAGEMENT because of the outrage called personally to offer free tickets but I refused.

FREE AGENCY - MANAGEMENT it doesn't matter as the gouging continues with prices headed into the stratosphere?

Whatever happened to fifty cents and our G.O. card getting us into the games? Now those were the days!

He is the "REAL DEAL"

Mitch after last week I think Tom Coughlin is the "real deal". He is becoming universally despised by his entire team.

42 - ZIP going into the 4th quarter; now that was embarrassing.

As for Shockey shooting off his mouth after the game, what do you think Vince Lombardi would have done with him?

Jeremy would have splinters sticking out of his ass from riding the bench for the rest of the year not to mention a football shoved up his keester by good old Vince.

It's a sorry state of affairs when you have the inmates running the asylum, but that's what the owner's have wrought in today's modern version of the game we once loved.

Didn't I teach you that WE WIN and LOSE as a TEAM and never ever blame or hang someone out to dry.

After all, I am the only General to LOSE EVERY SINGLE Color WAR.

Did any of you ever blame me?

    Of course NOT!

    Bob, you are right...

The inmates are running the asylum.

I will say this...if Coughlin doesn't figure this out quickly...I can hear it now...we will have a modern rendition of "Goodbye Allie" (as in Allie Sherman)

As for Shockey...I love his passion for the game but please just shut up and play the game.

And please Tim Lewis, Giants Defensive Coordinator, will you please get your points across to the defensive backs? Jeez, the receivers are open by 10 yards!!

...and what has happened to the vaunted pass rush....these QB's have enough time for a cup of coffee back there (sorry wrong thread)

The only optimistic way to look at it is that I penciled in the Giants to be 1-3 going into the Bye.

    Lets go G Men!

This may not be the right place to post this, but there is a great sadness in my heart as we mourn the passing of a living legend, a man who will forever be synonymous
with the Boston Celtics, Red Auerbach.

When you talk about special human beings you do not have to be a sports fan to appreciate his greatness. I feel compelled to write about how he affected and influenced my life one summer at Makowsky's.

I was very sad to learn late yesterday of the passing of the legendary coach of the Boston Celtics, Arnold "Red" Auerbach, who died at the age of 89. In 1962, I was a 16-year old boy from the Bronx who rooted for my beloved New York Knickerbockers.

Back then there were 9 teams in the NBA, 4 in the East and 5 in the West as expansion had included the fledgling Chicago Packers. And as sure as God made little green apples, each season my Richie Guerin led Knicks would finish 4th and last; whereas, the Boston Celtics led by Red Auerbach would win another championship.

I would travel to the old Madison Square Garden located on 48th street in NYC and pay fifty cents with my G.O. card to watch a doubleheader in the smoke filled Mecca of all basketball arenas even though our team was not really good.

It was in the summer of 1962 that I had a chance encounter to meet the legendary coach for the first and only time. Each summer, my parents would take me to the Catskill mountains where we would stay at a wonderful place called Makowsky's Cottage Colony. On this day, we had traveled to play softball over at Kutcher's Country Club in Monticello, NY.

After the game, I wandered over to the outdoor black asphalt basketball court and could hardly believe my eyes. On the court practicing, very hard, were a group of professional basketball players. And there sitting in the first row of the bleachers barking out orders was none other than Red himself.

Not that I noticed, but he had on a plain gray sweatshirt with V stitching, as there was no Nike back then, and had a whistle around his neck. And believe it or not, these players were running and sweating as they ran the plays that Red designed and was ordering them to do. Very quietly I sat down next to Red without saying a word.

These NBA players were practicing for the annual Maurice Stokes charity basketball game. For those of us who may not remember, this was a game organized by Hall Of Fame basketball player Jack Twyman of the Cincinnati Royals.

"Twyman will be remembered for more than just his basketball talent. He is one of the great humanitarians-not just in sports, but in all walks of life. He became the legal guardian of Maurice Stokes, a teammate who was paralyzed while playing a game in 1958. Twyman annually organized the NBA's Maurice Stokes Memorial Basketball game, held at Kutcher's Country Club in upstate New York, to raise funds for needy former players from the game's earlier days."

And on this day, here was a collection of professional basketball players practicing hard. And there was Red Auerbach so freely giving of his time, treating this practice, as if it were the 7th and deciding game of the NBA championship at stake. This was a simple charity event to raise money for a good cause without any paying patrons in the stands; just Red, and a teenage boy who was drinking it all in as if this was a dream.

I had a smile on my face from ear to ear, when all of a sudden, "Jungle" Jim Loscutoff, of the World Champion Boston Celtics started screaming, "Foul". Mind you, there were no referees present during this scrimmage between NBA players. They were playing the game exactly the same as we kids did in the schoolyard.

Without warning, Red blew his whistle loudly and turned to me and said, "Watch this kid". He shouted out for Jim to get his keester, but he didn't exactly say "keester," over to him. He came running over complaining that he had been hacked.

Very quietly, Red said, "Show me the blood?" Jim replied that there wasn't any. Red, with a scowl creasing his face looked directly at me, paying Jim no heed. He said, "Remember this kid for as long as you live, no blood no foul".

And then with a defying look he turned back toward Jim and told him to get his keester back onto the court. As Jim ran back frustrated, Red gave me a wry smile and a wink. Even then, I knew that he was delivering a message as I never forgot that day.

Within those few precious moments he taught me a lesson that has lasted me a lifetime. It wasn't until much later that I learned that Jim was a marginal NBA talent who Red pushed as hard as he could. Not because he didn't like him, to the contrary, because he knew that if he did not give 110% at all times, he wouldn't have been able to keep him on the team. He also taught me that in the game of life, that it was to be decided on the court between men, not by some Zebra blowing a whistle for a ticky-tack foul.

Red was a man of compassion who loved the game and the people around him. His kindness that day to a young teenage boy has never been forgotten. Red you will be deeply missed. My sincere condolences go out to his family, and to the world, as today we mourn the passing of a living legend.

It appears that Red Auerbach touched many peoples lives. To see a touching a video tribute copy and paste into your browser and then click on the right side where it says GO BIG

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2642131

Red was a man larger than life in that did not always play by the rules. That did not matter as young and old he was revered.

He once went into a steak house in Washington DC where JFK and some Senators were also dining. There was NO smoking allowed.

Red, as per his custom, at the end of his meal, lit up one of his famous cigars. No one uttered a word.

That was RED, as he may have bent the rules, but his compassion and love for others was well known. The world is a better place for his stopping through.

As a kid growing up I rooted for the Knicks. Nothing made more angrier than watching Auerbach light up his cigar on the bench. That meant of course my Knicks once again lost to the Celtics.

He was probably the greatest coach in all of professional sports, and the word DYNASTY was first associated with the Boston Celtics because of him.

He also was the GM later on and orchestrated one of the best moves in NBA history. He had the foresight to draft Larry Bird as a junior from Indiana State and waited a full year to receive the "fruits of his labor" This was an unprecedented move for the time. We all know what type of player Bird became, much to my chagrin, but that's how smart Red Auerbach was.

Mitch you brought up an interesting point about Red "red shirting" as a Junior Larry Bird. As much as I admired the man he was not the first to do this.

As a matter of fact, football as we know it today happened because of a series of events including the "red shirting" of a Junior QB.

It all has to do with NY Jets and really started back in 1963 when
the Jets selected Matt Snell, FB, Ohio State as their number one draft choice.

Snell also drafted by the Giants of the NFL. Snell became the first number one to sign with the N.Y. team. Also signing were Dave Herman and Mike Taliaferro both drafted by Jets and Giants and high draft choices Gerry Philbin and Ralph Baker.

The Jets also "red shirted" Jerry Rhome a QB out of Tulsa. That move started a chain of events and brought about the merger of the AFL and NFL.

In March of 1963, new ownership was formed with a five-man syndicate composed of David A. (Sonny) Werblin, Townsend B. Martin, Leon Hess, Donald C. Lillis and Philip H. Iselin who purchased the New York franchise for $1-million (March 28).

Within three weeks, April 15, Weeb Ewbank, who had been released by Baltimore, was named head coach and general manager of the team. On the same day the new owners changed the name from Titans to Jets. (April 15).

January 1, 1964 a trade between the Jets and Denver complete historic nine-player deal.

The Jets sent Dick Guesman, Ed Cooke, Charlie Janerette, Jim Price and Sid Fournet to Denver for Gene Prebola, Wahoo McDaniel, Gordy Holtz and Bob Zeman.

And another little known trade was made that same day with the Houston Oilers when on January 1st, the "Trade Rights" to their "red shirted" QB as the Jets trade rights to Jerry Rhome to Houston in return for a number one draft choice.

And who did that number one draft choice become? On November 28, 1964 using their pick gained from Houston, the Jets drafted Alabama QB Joe Namath.

On December 17, 1964 Matt Snell was honored when he was named the AFL's Rookie of the Year. Snell gained 948 yards and caught 56 passes.

Here's where the story gets somewhat interesting. On January 2, 1965 the day after the Orange Bowl, Joe Namath signed a Jets contract for a reported record rookie contract of $427,000.

Joe has a history of bad knees which Sonny Werblin knew about when he signed him. On January 9, 1965 the Jets also signed Heisman Trophy winner John Huarte of Notre His contract was estimated to be worth $200,000, giving the Jets over one-half million dollars worth of QB talent within a week.

On January 25th, some twenty-three days after signing, Joe Namath entered Lenox Hill Hospital to undergo his first operation, of many, for cartilage and ligament damage in his right knee.

One day while on the Golf course before his rookie season Joe Namath was playing golf with Sonny Werblin, Leon Hess and a friend of mine. Namath had a very good sense of humor. He winked to everyone but Sonny and then cried out after a golf swing, "My arm, my arm" to which Sonny never missed a beat and retaliated with, "My wallet, my wallet." They all shared a laugh.

AFter sitting on the bench for the opener, Namath entered the second quarter vs. Kansas City making his first pro appearance (second game of season on Sept. 18).

Joe Namath started his first game on September 26, 1965(third of the year for Jets) and throws 19-40-287 yards and two TD, but the Jets lost 33-21 to the Bills.

And the rest my friends is history, because of a trade of a journeyman QB from Tulsa named Jerry Rhome, who by the way, never signed with Houston and instead, signed with the Dallas Cowboys of the rival NFL. He was selected by the Cowboys in the 13th round of the draft because they were certain that he was going to sign with the Houston Oilers.

The Giants didn't have to leave the doors open at the west end of the field yesterday...lol...that was as windy as I ever remember it.

But it was almost 20 years ago at Giants Stadium that the G Men took advantage of a very, very windy day. In fact, I remember Harry Carson winning the coin toss and when asked if he wanted to kick off or receive...he simply said, "We'll take the wind"... The rest is history as the Giants earned their first ever trip to the Super Bowl by beating the Washington Redskins 17-0.

Mitch, remember the worst wind in a bad loss? The year before when the Bears ruled and we got shut out in the Windy City was the only time I saw a punter (Landeta) actually miss the ball because of the wind, from hand to foot the ball moved.

    Remembering Red continued.

I don't know if any of you know this story about Red Auerbach but...

Red reminded me so much of my father who was a master drill sergeant during WW II. The "tough love" with an exterior that was rock hard. He bled Celtic Green so it does not surprise me that he was unfriendly to other teams beat writers. But underneath he really cared.

I could see the frustration boiling up when Loscutoff screamed foul and he embarrassed him in front of a kid (me). But believe me, Red was pushing him because he loved him and wanted him to remain on the team. Sometimes things aren't what they appear to be.

I don't know if any of you know this story about Red but it's true.

Every year the Celtics would win and receive the last draft choice in the league. In 1969 they won the championship even though they finished the year 4th in a 7 team division.

Near the end of the season Red goes personally to scout Florida State phenom Dave Cowens who had not even played basketball until his Junior year in HS.

Cowens was considered a "tweener" who was too small to play Center in the NBA. Anyway Dave had an absolute awful first half of the game with Red sitting in the first row watching his every move.

At half time, Red lit up his famous "it's all over" trademark cigar and stood up for effect to walk out. Of course he took his sweet time to make sure that all the writers came rushing over to him.

He then purposely engaged them in conversation as they defended Cowens poor first half performance saying he had an atypical bad first half.

Red's well thought out callous reply was "I saw all I have to see" and with that ignored the writers and walked briskly past them and out of the arena.

The writers all assumed and wrote that Red hated Cowens and that he would never make it in the NBA.

When the 1970 draft came, the Celtics drafted 4th. When it was Red's turn the Commissioner said, "With the 4th pick in the NBA draft the Boston Celtics select Dave Cowens, Florida State."

Everyone screamed that Red had misled them? Red's answer was short and sweet when he repeated his quote, "I saw what I had to see."

Nonetheless, to save face, rival GM's said Cowens would never make it as a Center.

In the Maurice Stokes preseason basketball game all Cowens did was score about 30 points and pull down more than 10 rebounds. He went on to be the rookie of the year and became a Hall of Famer.

As for the Knicks that year, we drafted the immortal Mike Price.

    LOL

Yes Hutt, Red was always the GM I loved to hate. The best, absolutely the best Executive, talent evaluator, con artist in the history of sports, the way he drafted Bird a year early and the JB Carroll for Parish/McHale trade, grabbing Emmit Bryant from the Knicks even hurt. turning Paul Silas into a stud, the trades for Danny Ainge and Bill Walton, JoJo White....Havelchek stole the ball! I don't know how they ever lost. A true legend and from BROOKLYN. I will light up a cigar in his honor at my card game tonite!

Our D is real deep and can compensate in short term for loses on the D line. The real Thunder and Lightning will come out in Prime time. Giants 27- 12 winners. Kiwanuka will get 2 sacks and Pierce will dominate.

By the way, this great guy they drafted feom the University of Miami, no not Stevie, Sinorice Moss or "Moss Grows On A Rock", you know the never seen #83 who was going to stretch defenses, does he ever play? Just wondering?

But Augie, since you say the Chicago Bears offense is overrated I guess we have nothing to worry about.

And Augie since we're starting Camp Kiwanuka - Umenylora - Awasom, you had better hope that we don't need to visit Camp Ruegamer!

What's a matter with you guys? You've never heard of the immortal Giants Guard, Grey Ruegamer?

Let's say it all together boys and girls.

Mathias Kiwanuka to Umenylora to Awasom to Ruegamer.

This is the Circle of Life for our beloved NY Football Giants.

And don't forget that now playing Right Defensive End and Wide Receiver from the University of Maryland, #13 Stevie Kiviat.

Nobody roots harder then me for my beloved Giants...but they are now a walking M.A.S.H. unit.

In fact, I hear that Bobby as in "Hutt" ( Did you ever see those pics of him in the O.R. ) is going to perform surgery on Sinorice Moss, and possibly insert a "heart"...can this guy finally get on the field...we really need him now. All I've been hearing is how he is going to "stretch the field"....It's time Sinorice..."Just do it"

This is my take on the game. If...and I do mean if, the G Men can get a lead...then they will have a good chance to win. They should run Tiki left behind Pettigout and then run Tiki right behind Mackenzie...and guess what? run Tiki up the middle behind O'Hara, Snee and Diehl. Sprinkle in a little Brandon "The Bruiser" Jacobs. Keep throwing to Shockey on those 10-15 yard strikes. Throw it to Plaxico where only he can catch it.

If we have the lead...that will force Grossman to throw...and we should compensate for our lost DE's by blitzing Gibril Wilson periodically.

If we do that, then we'll win. If we fall behind, then it is trouble because the Bears' D will dominate.

Just make sure Kate Mara sings the National Anthem before the game. She is undefeated in big games.

I believe that is what the Giants are doing. They have a very good Offensive Line, many weapons ( Barber, Shockey, Buress, Jacobs, Toomer, Carter, Moss ) they'll have to draft another back next year, along with another wideout.

I think Eli will be a very, very good QB who will just be asked to the manage the game. He is not that accurate as a passer, (Of course, playing in Giants Stadium doesn't help) nor does he have the talent of his brother Peyton. But who does?

A loss to the Bears 38-20. Game just ended. This was an opportunity lost. Without a doubt.

End of the 1st half the Bears had a 3rd & 22 and made it. Ended up scoring & changed the momentum.

Giants fought back to 24-20 and with 11 minutes left in the 4th Quarter. Coughlin decides to go for a 52 yard field goal. Not only does Feely miss it short but it is returned for 108 yard touchdown. Why would you do that when you have probably the best coffin corner kicker in the NFL in Feagles? That is a "bonehead play" call by their head coach. With 11 minutes left? That makes no sense. The defense was playing well with plenty of time left. I just don't get it.

  • At 11/13/2006 1:35 PM , Blogger Bob Hutt said...

Mitch you may be fined for calling our Head Coach for a bonehead play? How dare you?

After all there were 11 minutes left in the game, down 4 points, with one of the best coffin corner kickers in the game ready to pin the Bears back within their own ten yard line.

And the great Coach decides to go for a 52 yard FG after his kicker had already melted down with a 33 yarder miss in the opening drive into swirling winds at Giants Stadium.

And if he missed the Bears get the ball near midfield instead of within their own ten.

And you dare call our great Coach a bonehead?

Ah Mitch do you know that half of the Giant team was running off the field when they saw the FG try come up short and the player just standing in the End Zone?

The reason he hesitated because he couldn't believe how stupid the Giants Special Team was because they were trotting off the field.

So now let's see if we can sum this up correctly? The Coach calls for an impossible to make 52 yard FG into swirling winds and the players run off the field as they ball is caught short in the End Zone.

And you think it was a Bone Head play?

Not if you bet on the BEARS!!!

    LOL

Very painful loss. Mitch you mirrored my thoughts. Once he made that 26 yd run our patchwork defense stopped attacking. When Tiki was hurt, why no Jacobs? Sure Tiki recovered nicely, but Jacobs should have had his 8 carries. Also no throws to Shockey! Pettigout going down is probably the worst out for the season injusy yet. He was having all pro type year at most important spot on the OL.With 3 minutes to go in the half I was writing my "Dear B HUTT" email vindicating my opinion and I'm now WRONG!!!But I still believe, since the 4 D starters will be back soon.

    Fine me!

Head coaches get paid millions of dollars to make important decisions . You don't have to be a genius to see this was an incredibly dumb call on Coughlin's part.

    Fine me!

I have to see in the paper this morning that Coughlin takes full responsibility for his actions. So what, all I heard when he got here was that he was going to restore discipline (The G men are 26th in the league in penalties) and he was going to restore "Giant Pride."

Well, what is that? Stupidity? Everyone knows that Field Goal teams are stocked with blockers, not tacklers. Plus, you are kicking into swirling winds and he couldn't make a 33 yarder as Bob said before. So what do you think might happen if the kick is short? Also, the Bears ran a short field goal attempt in for a touchdown a year ago.

    Fine me!

On another note, Did anyone notice that when the Bears scored it sounded like Soldier Field?

Typical Giants fans (myself included...because I turned down tickets for the game)Let's face it...Giants' fans average 60 years of age and do not like night games. They like to have an afternoon out enjoy the game and be home for 60 Minutes.

I guess they are smart though, because they scalped the tickets and sold them to alot of Bear fans.

    Fine me!

The problem now... are all the injuries. Bob Whitfield is a grizzled veteran but he is old and Left tackles are too difficult to replace. It's a shame because Luke Pettigout was finally playing like an All Pro.

    Fine me!

P.S. Eli! let me introduce you to #80. He is your tight end. He is allowed to catch the ball now and then.

    Fine me!

Do you think this rates up there with the "Miracle of the Meadowlands?".....Probably not....but very close.

  • At 11/14/2006 8:16 AM , Blogger Bob Hutt said...

NO Mitch not even close to the Miracle of the Meadowlands. In that game all the Giants had to do was to take a knee and the game was over.

Coughlin was trying to win the game while trailing by 4 points. It was the absolute WRONG call to even attempt the FG with 11 minutes left in the game instead of pinning the Bears back in their own end of the field.

I doubt you will find anyone, even his own teammates that really believed there was even a remote chance for Feeley to make that kick from there? I just don't know what Coughlin could have been thinking?

He took the air out of the balloon with some of the dumbest calls I have ever seen a coach make. For example that 22 yard run by the Bears before the half when it was 3rd down and a mile.

99% of all teams do a draw play in that situation. So how could the Giants be caught off guard? We all knew what was coming and Mitch I'll bet that even Augie did too?

Then after that disaster he puts in an old washed up gimpy Sam Madison with less than 15 seconds in the game knowing the Bears had to go deep. Of course predictably Madison comes up lame, blows out his hamstring, and the Bears score a TD.

Then after Toomer goes down for the season, knowing that Shockey finally was implemented into the game plan instead of being another offensive lineman last week, he is completely taken out of the game plan. How happy do you think the Bears coaching staff was that Shockey was only thrown to one time the entire night?

How do you take an all pro TE capable of dominating a game and only throw to him just once? And when the game was getting out of reach, Coughlin still didn't throw to him.

Add to it that Tiki was banged up with a bad hand, and Coughlin only ran Jacobs twice; although both times, he ran through the Bears as if they were swiss cheese.

And Eli regressed once again as he became flustered after the debacle by the coaching staff.

And then when Luke Petitgout went down, with yet another devestating injury for the season, he brought in 100-year old Bob Whitfield.

Seriously, Whit is so old that Dave Baskin, even now, could have done a better job.

The Bears were going around and through Whitifield as if he were a turnstile in a subway station.

On Sunday night, up until the last minute of the first half, the undermanned G-Men were playing superb football.

And from that point on, the coaching staff submarined the entire effort of the team.

As a result, when the night was done, the Giants looked like a broken down valise in which the wheels fell completely off the bus.

Make no mistake they are in deep, deep, trouble.

And NO, Augie it doesn't mean that you throw in the towel. But Augie, no matter how much you love this team, don't be looking at them through your rose colored glasses. The Big Blue Wrecking Crew will be if for a dog fight from here on out just to make the playoffs.

The injuries they've sustained may be just too much too overcome. And, whether they speak up or not, the players can't have too much faith in this coaching staff as Coughlin and his band of merry men coaches suck!

Fine me if you want Mitch, but on Sunday night the Giants were totally outcoached. So who would we rather have as the Giants Head Coach? Here are the choices?

    Tom Coughlin or Lovey Smith?

    Tom Coughlin or John Fox?

    Tom Coughlin or Eric Mangini?

Tom Coughlin or "Play Not to Lose Pee Wee" Herman Edwards who can't read time, let alone manage a clock?

    Tom Coughlin or Allie Sherman?

    Tom Coughlin or Ray Handley?

    Tom Coughlin or John McVay?

    Now that's frightening!

Osi and Mike will be back, Emmons too. Maybe McKensie moves to LT and Seubert becomes a starter at RT. Manning will shake off a bad game. We are still in first place. I'm still confident but disheartened and pissed off.

Rob, you're trying to figure out why Shockey was so quiet? So is the Bears coaching staff and all Giant fans across the country???

Is there any football fan in America, make that the world, who thought Coughlin made the correct call in trying that 52 yard FG into the swirling winds of Giant Stadium?

What could he have been thinking of? Just a complete meltdown by the coaching staff with everything they tried to do.

And as for Eli he was simply awful. When he gets in that "I can't complete the simplest of passes mode" it's time, just for the day, to change to the back-up QB.

After all, they did this with YA Title, Phil Simms, Bernie Kosar, and even the great John Elway. And remember those great Oakland Raider teams how many times did 100-year old George Blanda come off the bench as the relief pitcher/QB?

The point is when the starting QB is having an off game, instead of watching the game slip away, bring in the relief pitcher. When did we get away from this concept?

Even the great David Carr, and yes, I am being facetious, was benched for the back up QB. But the very next week he was back and played a good game.

Tom Couhglin was brought here not to be anyone's friend, but instead, to be a staunch disciplinarian. What I see is an intense coach trying NOT to upset his players.

It's time to take off the kid gloves and play the guys who are putting out on a given day; and if that means benching your superstar prima donna's then so be it. Eli is a big enough man that he can handle it.

You do a jump shot, you sit out the game. You put the ball under your uniform, you sit out the game. All it takes is a couple of times for the players to get the message.

We are all proud Giant fans. Let's have a team that embodies what Giant football is about.

    Bob
    Everyone loves the backup Quarterback.

We have Jared Lorentzen, commonly referred to as:

    "The Hefty Lefty"
    or
    "The Pillsbury Throwboy"

He is 6'4" tall and weighs 285.

Can you imagine him & Brandon Jacobs lining up in the same backfield?

As far as Shockey being so quiet. There are two ways to interpret that....

    1. Quiet, as in not opening up his mouth after the Bears game.

    or....

    2. Quiet, as in not being part of the game plan by only getting thrown to twice.

Here is my take on this.

#1 Shockey was read the riot act after the game in Seattle this year and was told by Giants' brass to just shut up & play. Do not question the head coach or the organization.

#2 I believe Shockey was in the game plan. The previous week he made 8 catches against Houston with 2 TD catches. (Burress did not play in that game) Two things went against him. First, the Bears have very speedy linebackers which impacted somewhat Shockey's effectiveness. But more importantly, this goes back to Eli playing so poorly. He sometimes to a fault just looks for Burress and doesn't make the proper reads. He threw the ball 9 times to Tyree in that game. (only 2 receptions) NINE TIMES! That is ridiculous. Eli is still an unpolished QB. He does not have the great physical gifts that his brother has and as I have said before, he is not accurate. I think he throws to Burress alot because he knows when his passes go awry, Burress will leap and make the spectacular catch and the result is that Eli looks good. Shockey is a playmaker and the Giants feed off his emotions. He must get the ball...and it is Eli's job to throw it to him. I'll bet you that Shockey will see the ball plenty this Monday night.

Also, I hope the game plan is such where Whitfield will get some help with either a back or guard slide his way and chip the DE. If not, you run the risk of Manning gettng pummeled and then you very well may see the "Hefty Lefty" but it will be for the wrong reason.

Don't sweat it...You know how hard it is to go 1-15...it's probably just as hard to go 15-1.

This week, just close your eyes put the games up on a wall...take 10 steps back....close your eyes and throw darts!

    Could you do any worse?

The only game i had right was the Cowboys. I work with a die hard Redskin fan so every week we have a lunch bet with the points on Giant and Skin games and we had upped the bet to one good lunch for a change. If I didn't have that wager I probably would have taken the skins and the points and had an O fer. To me this the the must win week, not last week.

Augie don't take their crap about going 1 - 15. Just remember I went O for life in Color War as a General.

    LOL

Hy recently wrote to me telling me that with Phyllis Zeke charm that I never had any chance as he was smitten with her.

The problem, I too was smitten with her. If I was Rembrandt himself, believe me no one at Makowsky's would have ever known.

The smile on her face was victory enough for me. By the way, Phyllis never reads the football blog so she'll never know what I wrote. Isn't that right Stevie?

    LOL

Augie throw the darts as Mitch suggested. Or make your selections and then flip each and every pick around. Let us know how you do this weekend?

As for our Big Blue Wrecking Crew, my gut tells me that they'll get blown out this weekend by the Jags. They are too big and physical for our psychologically impaired G- Men.

By the way Mitch, can you introduce Eli to Jeremy? Please tell him that he is on the team.

    LOL

    Go Augie!

Augie, Mitch, and fellow Giants fans, no loss including the Miracle of the Meadowlands was ever more embarassing this. Let me count the ways...

    1. Plexico not contesting PacMan's interception and then not tackling him is inexcusable. Did you see him laughing with the Titan players at the end of the game? He is NOT a Giant and never will be. He is a head case.

    2. Frank Walker's illegal hit in the 4th quarter out of bounds and missed forearm to the head of Vince Young allowed the Titan Drive to continue instead of the Giants taking over leading 21-0.

    3. Eli unraveling before our very eyes and Coughlin allowing him to continue. He should have been removed from the game.

    4. Not wrapping up on Young on a 4th down play by the rookie DE which would have again turned the ball over to the Giants leading 21-14.

    5. Then with the game tied up Eli completely self destructed with less than a minute to go with yet another horrible pass that could only be intercepted which it was.

The end was totally predictable as this may be a bigger collapse than what happened a few years ago in SF.

As for Coughlin he has lost control of this team and must be fired.

For what it is worth do you think Dave Baskin or my father Dave Hutt would have played Tiki Barber after what he said this week. I can tell you now that Tiki privately could have spoken to Coughlin as a man and voiced his displeasure. Instead he laid Coughlin out to dry and took an unnecessary hit against a soft Eli Manning. Is this how a team player or a man acts?

The sooner he's gone the better. No one can question his talent or his will to win but his actions as a man are appalling.

You can stick a fork in the Giants for 2006 as the wheels fell completely off the bus this evening. RIP!

    Hey Bobby, Augie...

"I hear the Giants charter flight was delayed coming home from Tenessee. The pilots decided to quit halfway to New York."

(just a little levity to ease the tension)

Bobby, you are 1000% correct in everything you said.

I am just hoping that Eli does improve, because after giving up two first round picks and trading Philip Rivers to San Diego this will set this franchise back ten years if he doesn't.

By the way, this loss reminded me of:

    1. Eagles 17 Giants 13 - Giants only needing to kneel down to win and...we all know the rest. "Miracle of the Meadowlands" is born. ( I call it the "incredible play call & fumble" )

    2. Rams 19 Giants 13 (OT Playoff Game ) - Giants led 13 - 6 going into the 4th quarter. Flipper Anderson catching a 30 yard pass and running straight through the Giants Stadium tunnel and into the locker room.

    3. Vikings 23 Giants 22 (Playoff game Giants led 22-13 with 2 minutes to go ) On sides kick, pass interference "ugh" I can't even type reliving this playoff game again.

    4. 49ers 39 Giants 38 (Playoff Game) - Giants led 38 - 14 midway through the 4th quarter. The only image I see is Trey Junkin's low snap and Matt Allen tried a desperation pass downfield to Rich Seubert. ( I still believe he was interfered with, but after blowing that big a lead like that, it really didn't matter.

    4. And now yesterday's debacle. There is no name for it yet...but it may be the one that decides the fate of Tom "cough it up" Coughlin.

Mitch, I did not bet on the game. In the football pool where you pick every game, I had the Titans as I suggested to Augie.

Notwithstanding that I won, I couldn't sleep last night, as that's how awful this loss truly is.

Eli is a soft player - despite his now apparent limited talent. He has NO visable fire in his belly, somthing every QB MUST have.

No matter what your skill level, if you don't have that "take charge - listen to me" attitude, YOU CAN'T COMMAND RESPECT.

Just yesterday, Vince Young had a receiver drop one his awful "quivering duck" passes.

I don't know if anone noticed, but immediately with the camera following Young, he pointed two fingers to his eyes to tell his receiver "never take your eyes off of me again".

And that symbolizes the difference between Young and Eli. One plays with passion and fire, whereas, the other doesn't.

Do you remember Dan Marino's icy stares when a received dropped one of his passes?

Do you remember all the other great QB's, all of which played with fire and weren't afraid to tell their teammates exactly how they felt on the spot.

Now we have the gentile southerner Mr. Eli. No wonder he screws up? He has NO RESPECT and his coach treats him like a child protege.

The time for the honeymoon grace period is over. Stop believing the exaggerated hype.

I can tell despite all the offensive firepower on the Giants, Eli is a streaky mediocre QB who will never rise above where he is now. There's just NO improvement; only frustration with his inept ability and decision making. Even worse, he does not possess the necessary FIRE in his belly!

As for the rest of Giants, Tom Coughlin was brought here NOT TO BE THEIR FRIEND, but to toughen this bunch up. Instead, he bites his tongue, roams the sidelines acting like a madman, and has lost total control of this team.

We now have Tiki, Plexico and Jeremy as our new coaching staff. Let's see if I have it right?

Give Tiki the ball everytime, throw everything to Plexico and then throw everything else to Jeremy. The last time I looked there was only ONE FOOTBALL to play with but this doesn't stop these selfish players who think they're better than everyone else.

How did Tiki do at crunch time yesterday? He was given the ball four times to get the ONE necessary first down to END the comeback. I wonder if MOTOR MOUTH has anything to say today???

Just a disgusting loss that symbolizes this LOST SEASON.

It doesn't get any uglier than this. Augie no matter how much we love your "Rose Colored" glasses spirit, nothing can turn this season around. The Giants had the fork stuck in them yesterday. The JETS and Giants have the same record.

One is heading toward making the playoffs and has hope for the future, and as for the other team, it is a total basket case.

Which team has more talent? I rest my case, and as for my beloved Giants...

    RIP

  • At 11/30/2006 3:26 PM , Blogger Bob Hutt said...

Okay boys and girls, let's see if we can follow the bouncing football?

    1. Tiki blames the coaching staff for the terrible playoff loss to Carolina.

    2. Jeremy feels left out and he too blames the coaching staff.

    3. Plexico checks out before the last 2005 team meeting blaming the Giants & Steeler coaching staff for not throwing him the damn ball often enough on every play.

    4. Tiki says he's leaving at the end of the season or on a jet plane, or something to that effect, but says it will not become a distraction. He accuses Gary Myers his former friend and broadcast partner and Michael Irwin. He calls them idiots. Since Tiki is always right, the Giants immediately proceed to lose their subsequent three games and counting.

    5. Tiki, after only gaining 2 yards per his 10 carries against the Jags, this classy teammate throws Coughlin under the bus again just for good measure. And while he's at it, says why the hell was Coughlin letting damn Eli throw the ball since he sucks as a QB. Give the damn ball to Tiki Bird.

    6. So OK, Coughlin gives the ball to Tiki twice to run out the clock and he simply sucks. Of course Brandon Jacobs was running through the Titans like Swiss cheese but the wannabe coach Tiki, the coach killer, said to give the damn ball to him.

    7. While the G-Men are self destructing, Plexico does his part by refusing to continue to run out the pass pattern on yet another overthrown Eli pass. As a result, PacMan intercepts and Plexico makes a half hearted attempt at tackling him. Plex doesn't do defense as he's not getting paid to do that.

    8. Then with the game over, a back up lunatic DB throws a left cross to the head of QB Vince Young out of bounds to continue the improbable rally.

    9. Then rookie DE Kiawatha Pocahontas decides he's playing touch football and inexplicably turns Vince Young loose to score yet another TD when he was sacked and the game was officially over.

    10. You want more? Boy, do we have more for you. It's Tiki left, and then Tiki right for no gain. So its back to Eli who lobs one up to PacMan again so that the Giants could make the team bus and are not forced to play overtime.

    11. Then after watching Tom Coughlin throw up and genuflect on the sideline he takes the stage and throws the conspirators including Eli under the bus.

    12. The players ask for a player only meeting, the first time they asked the coach for anything, which Coughlin graciously allows.

    13. And following the private team meeting, Strahan immediately rats out Plexico on his radio show. Is this a soap opera or what?

    14. Plexico then counters by saying that Strahan should have talked to him or he's going to break it off with his ex-wife.

    15. Jeremy then says the Cowboys have ZERO chance of beating the Giants this Sunday.

    16. Parcells says he knows nothing about the quote except that his Cowboys rat him out saying that he's already put the quote up on the bulletin board.

    17. Strahan beats up a female ESPN reporter for asking him a question about the very quote he said on his radio show. LOL

    18. T O then pipes in that he loved "Vanderjecter the choker" who Parcells cut the day before and T O warns Parcels that the new guy Gramatica better be good. How do you think Marty feels for this Sunday's game with T O's ringing endorsement?

    19. Plexico then says T O is soft and that Roy Williams is a dirty hitter who only hits receivers when they aren't looking.

    20. And so it goes, as this is the continuing saga of how the worm turns, or as Augie would say: GO BIG BLUE to the Superbowl! Augie, Toilet Bowl is more likely as Mitch and I want to puke.

    Prediction: Cowboys 45 Giants 7

I just love this game! The only thing missing is if the Giants sign Stephon Starbury after he is cut by the Knicks as their new QB replacing Eli. Yes, that Starbury who said before the team lost every game after he opened his mouth that he was the self proclaimed best point guard in the league. And the final cherry would be if Larry Brown signs a new $50,000,000 contract and takes over as the Giants coach. Hey, the way this soap opera is playing out, it would only be fitting. Yes, the inmates have taken over the asylum.

The Giants are such a discombobulated group of individuals that maybe this Sunday the "Seinfeld" episode where George Costanza's opposite theory will happen.

It's as good a theory as any!

    So here's my take.

Giants start out in a "no huddle" Eli Manning continues his pass accuracy syndrome by throwing the ball over Shockey's head. Roy Williams intercepts and is running back on a short field. "Plexiglass" Buress throws his body at Williams with a huge hit and forces a fumble which in turn has the ball bounce in the direction of Tiki, who runs to the goal line and is caught from behind. Naturally, Tom "cough it up" Coughlin calls for Jacobss to get the ball in from the 1 yard line. Three downs later the G-Men are still at there and he decides to go for it on 4th down. What to do? Sinorice Moss gets into a game (remember him) and scores a touchdown on a rollout from Eli. The Giants finally score the first points and the rest is history.

The game goes back and forth, the Giants faithful are actually getting loud in the stands as the 4th quarter winds down. At this point the Giants are ahead 17-14. Two minutes to go and Dallas is driving down the field with Romo leading them. They line up for a game tying field goal and Martin Grammatica, (who was signed this week to replace Vanderjact) misses a chip shot field goal as Tuna looks on with disgust. Big Blue gets off the "schneid."

"The opposite Theory" of Seinfeld prevails.

    I can dream can't I?

Wait it's Dallas this week, right? Oh shoot, "Who shot JR? is the prevailing theme.

    Maybe I won't wake up....

Hey did any of you guys see that bonehead play by the Knicks Nate Robinson with the Knicks trailing by a couple of points late in the game?

He steals the ball and is ahead of the field by his lonesome. As he approaches the top of the key, he bounces the ball ten feet into the air, grabs it, does a 360 and tries to dunk which he misses as it carooms off the rim.

The whistle blows and he is called for traveling. Jerome James all 700 pounds of the round of mound sitting on the bench belly laughs.

King Isiah Thomas looks like he is about to upchuck his lunch as he calls an immediate time out. Stevie Francis Kiviat says to His Holiness Isiah, let me talk to the idiot and read him the riot act.

Larry Brown, not ours, but the former coach of the Knicks had to be rolling in the aisle. If Larry still had been the coach one of two things would have happened.

Either he would have been cut from the team before he was able to get his seat on the bench or he would have been shot by a firing squad.

Never in my life have I seen anyone so full of himself that he pulled a stunt like this.

The bottom line in case you missed it is that Nate "I'm Great" Robinson said he would never do it again unless the Knicks were winning or trailing by 20 or more points.

I have the under for the Knicks to win 30 games this season and we just started.

Augie do you think they can make the playoffs and win the championship too?

This just in Cowboys 59 - Giants 7.

Plexico goes wild in the end zone celebrating his TD with the Big Blue trailing by 59!

    I just love this game!

Goodbye Coughlin, Goodbye Coughlin, Goodbye Coughlin...I "HOPE" to see you go!

4th & 1 and he runs Jacobs "outside" (should be up the middle)... Loses 2 yards. Nice coaching Tom...

4th Quarter...Jacobs runs a big one down to the 10 yard line early 4th Quarter and what does Coughlin do? He takes Jacobs out of course and Giants settle for a field goal.

Less than 2 minutes to go in the game it's all tied up and the defense lets a big pass to be completed from Romo to Whitten. The Defense never makes a big play when they have to.

    Field goal ...game over 23-20.

Inconsistent Red Zone play, 9 penalties for 96 yards. This is supposed to be Coughlin's strength "Discipline"....sorry, I don't see it.

I thought Eli Manning played well this week...(but he will need a good QB's coach with the new regime)

I guess this week one of the Giants will blame the equipment manager for losing this game. After all, he must have made the decision to wear the "Red Jerseys" today.

You are right about the "time out", but it was called by Plaxico on the field, because he saw Coughlin running up and down the sideline like a raving lunatic. So he assumed he wanted a time out.

Coughlin preaches discipline. Too bad he doesn't practice what he preaches, because you have a head coach who is out of control on the sidelines ranting & raving...waving his arms....how can a team be disciplined, when their head coach is out of control?

I'm sorry, he is the wrong man to lead this team. Even with all the injuries, this team has enough talent to be better than 6-6.

    David...

"Hail to the Redskins" (Oy Vay)....

Listen, you have a Hall of Fame Head Coach in Joe Gibbs. Did he suddenly become dumb?....

Your DC is Greg Williams whose mantra is Blitz, Blitz, Blitz and if that doesn't work then maybe you should try a zone blitz. Did he become stupid?

Your OC is Al Saunders who if I'm not mistaken was the OC under Dick Vermiel when he won his Super Bowl with the St Louis Rams a couple of years ago. Did he suddenly develop brain cramps as well?

You have Joe Bugel as the assistant Head Coach. Isn't he the one who developed the famous Offensive Line known as "The Hogs" ( Russ Grim, Joe Jacoby, Mark May & Jeff Bostic ) He has been with Joe Gibbs from the beginning.( winning 3 Super Bowls)

Did the game pass Gibbs & Bugel by? Possibly? But I think it is personnel. They just don't have enough talent. (in my humble opinion) They seem to rely on "free agency" and never build through the draft. Same philosophy as the Oakland Raiders.

I feel your pain David as a fan & paying customer....but....

I must say that I have no sympathy for the Washington Redskins franchise because I remember as well as Bobby Hutt remembers that on a cold day in 1972 the Redskins were "creaming" the Giants 69-41 and George Allen decided to kick a field goal with less than a minute remaining in the game just to rub it in and the G Men fell 72-41.

    I absolutely LOVED to watch
Fat Sonny sling the football for the Redskins and George Allen's "over the hill gang". I've followed them ever since.

(By the way....The Reskins got Sonny Jurgensen in a trade from what team???)

Now I watch them and get aggravated by watching what could be a good team playing "two hand touch" football. I don't really blame the couches, I blame Dan Snyder and Steve Spurier for wrecking this team. However I don't have a clue as to who picked both of the Redskins quarterbacks. The rookie needs more time and Brunell needs newer legs.
They are competitive....but they just lose anyway. I still think they play better football then the Giants who are so boring and boaring that they make me ill. While I don't really blame the Giants couch, he doesn't seem to have control over his team the way he should. Can you imaging Parcells putting up with this crap??

Meanwhile the other side of the TV has the Jets. What a pleasant surprise. Like every other Jet fans I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. Maybe this Mangini guy is for real. He's taken a huge part of the Patriots with him. His players might not be the most talented yet but they are playing smart football. That's why Bellicheck is so "pissed off" at Mangini. The Jets will be the team to threaten the Patriots run.
Maybe not this year but soon. Doesn't Mangini look like a weeble?

By the way Bobby....I didn't care if we came if first place second place or last place in color war. I always had fun.

Listen you guys need to lighten up. You could also be Knicks fans.

Sonny came from the Eagles Stevie. Remember when he weighed about 300 pounds with that gut hanging over his uniform? But could he ever throw the ball.

Stevie you should know better than anyone that you will always be my number one pick in anything!

You always gave 100%, and never complained, and that is what makes you so special.

You know that I love you!

Dear Redskin fans:Riggins on 4th and one in the superbowl,a lifetime memory.I loved that guy so much i dropped my Skin hatred for the Hog years. Also, totally respected Gibbs for walking while on the top of the heap when him,Parcells and Bill walsh ruled to coaching ranks. The game HAS passed him by ,not as bad as in Oakland where Shell was always a great lineman and never a great coach. Bit love to watch an asshole like Snyder suffer. First time in my life I'm jealous of the Jet's. Parcells morfed in Belicheck and he is morphing into Mangini which is why he despises the young stud so much. As for me, my 1/2 full glass goes empty if we blow this game against Weinke led Panthers. Oy do I miss 92.

In response to the yahoo who said LT Tomlinson is a better running back than Jim Brown.

What have you done for me lately? That seems to be the prevalent theme for today's experts who believe that professional mercenaries playing the game today are superior to the stars from yesteryear. And they base this on they are bigger, stronger, faster, than those stars who played 50 years ago. But in life, opinions are like assholes, in that everyone has one - including me.

I am 61 years old and although I never saw him play I know that Babe Ruth was the greatest player of all time. Why? Because the SOB out homered almost the entire AL teams. Think about that?

The juiced up Barry Bonds would have to hit 400 homers in one season to out homer just two teams in the NL. Babe Ruth was hitting 50 and 60 homers per season when an entire team was hitting 14.

As for Jim Brown I did see him play his entire career. And I am a diehard NY Giant fan not a Cleveland Brown fan. And NO, I do not like what Jim Brown has become after his career in football ended with all his many problems. But without question, he was and still is the GREATEST running back of all time.

Brown played in a league with fewer teams; therefore the product was NOT diluted as it is today in BASKETBALL, BASEBALL, HOCKEY & FOOTBALL. The players that played the game did not make million dollar salaries and were the best of the best in that era.

Can you imagine being a hitter and having to face Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, Juan Marichal, Bob Gibson just to name a few on successive days. And if you hit 300 and belted 500 homeruns in your career back then it meant something because the pitching mound was higher and the ball was not juiced as the players weren't either. Does Bonds, McGuire, Sosa and this elk come to mind?

And the hitters were Frank Robinson, Hank Aaron, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Al Kaline, Willie Mays, Willie McCovery, Roberto Clemente, Carl Yastremski, Ted Williams, Orlando Cepeda, Harmon Killebrew just to name a few.

Just look at today's free agent signings in baseball. Gil Meche $55 million, Gary Matthews Jr. $50 million, Juan Pierre $50 million, and so on, and so on. I wouldn't pay to watch these guys. I wouldn't watch them play for free as you would have to force me. That's what happens with expansion and a watered down product. Most of us today can no longer even name all the teams in each league. Back when Jim Brown played we could name every team and just about every player on each team in every sport.

Have you seen some of the stiffs playing NBA basketball? I wouldn't watch them in a pick up game if they were playing in a school yard. They are so lacking in basic skills and an understanding of the game that it is simply embarrassing. Yes, today's athletes are bigger and stronger, but with evolution this will continue through the halls of time.

In order to be the best, you have to dominate your era and that's exactly what Jim Brown and Babe Ruth did in their time. And with all due respect to today's athlete no one has ever done it better at their respective positions then these two.

Spring is in the air. The franchise QB is back, Plax tried, Shockey shocked, Barber ran, the D bent but didn't break. Actually INT's occurred and like old Giant teams the O gave us enough of a second 1/2 push for an incredible punter to land 6/9 inside the 20 and stretch the field. We are back. Also, love the ass kickin saints put on Traitor Bill and whiney #81 .One back for NFC East and we own the tiebreakers. Time to kick eagle feathers.
Re: Jim brown,at 52 some of my early NFL memories are all geared to Jimmy sweeping right and rumbling. He's truly best ever but LT is dominating right now and really can't compare era's the spped and the training, conditioning truly superior in today's game. Old timer Booby, no one mentions guys'like OTTO Graham as the greatest QB but in late 50's wasn't he the only one? Now even Unitas is forgotten

    OK Giant fans...

The game this Sunday against the Eagles is now truly for at least a wild card spot in the playoffs. It is a MUST WIN for both teams!!!

    Here is the scenario:

    Both teams are 7-6 overall
Both teams are 6-3 in the NFC
Both teams are 3-1 in the Division

The Eagles are playing well and have been energized by Jeff Garcia. Yes, the same Jeff Garcia that broke all Giant hearts in that famous playoff loss to San Francisco.

It's time for Tiki, Strahan, Plaxico, & Jeremy to all shut up and focus on the job at hand. It's is time to suck it up and play like your playoff lives depend on it.

Because it does. Every game from here on out is really a playoff game.

Now....if Dallas happens to lose Saturday night against Atlanta....

Well....I don't even want to think about it

Here's a "fond" trip down Giant history memory lane for 1966 season
    Nice team record 1-12-1.
Did you know that Mara grabbed Pete Gogalak from AFL Bills and Commish Al Davis started the raiding war that led to the merger that year?
    Only all star......Spider Lockhart
Baby bull Tucker Fredrickson was 65 All pro, he was out the whole year.
Homer Jones was it. Career average 22.6 yds per rec. 24.7 one season.
    The chant was:Good-bye Allie"

    Steve...

How many days to Pitchers & Catchers?

The only good thing about yesterday was the the time spent with my son Jason. I don't know how it looked on the tube, but it seemed like the Eagles wanted it more. They beat the Giants at the point of attack on both sides of the ball.

The strange thing is that the NFC is so bad...the Giants still control their own destiny. This mediocre team can still make the playoffs by winning their last two games...and if everyone loses you can see a 7-9 team make the playoffs. That is ABSURD! As far as this Giants' fan is concerned...This team is dead even if they qualify for the playoffs...stick a fork in them...they are done.

Augie, please don't tell me THEY can still make the playoffs....I'm not interested...even if they "run the table"....THEY WILL BE...ONE & DONE....ANYWAY!

A playoff team should be getting better in December, not worse!

So Steve, you are right to quote Dandy Don Meredith....

The Tom Coughlin watch starts now...

Please, will someone tell me how many days to Pitchers & Catchers? I'm sure if Bobby reads this he'll have a breakdown somewhere of every team's Spring Training schedule...lol

I almost threw up. We kept fighting back from lame turnovers and penalties, some great throws, catches,Plaxoco drawing PI penalties then the Defense really stunk. Pierce, Emmons and other LB's were invisible. This is most disappointed I've been since the strike season of 86 cost us to go from champs to chumps. NoD= no shot

You guys missed the most revolting development of all at the end of the first half. The Eagles have second at goal at the Giants one yard line. The two minute warning sounds with the Giants having all three of their time-outs left.

It's a certain score TD or FG for the Eagles. Any confident coach has to burn all three of his time-outs to give the Giants nearly two full minutes to come back and score.

Instead we get this years Birdbrain Tom Coughlin trying to win the Herman "pee wee" Edwards can't manage the clock award. He lets the clock run down to 1:03 and then calls time out on 4th down.

What happens? Of course, the Eagles now go for it on 4th down and score. Thank you very much Pee Wee Coughlin.

Now the Giants lost a full minute and drive the length of the field getting down to the Eagles 25 yard line. There is only 7 seconds left in the half instead of having 57 seconds to score a TD Dumbo Coughlin sends in the kicker to settle for a FG.

Either Coughlin is a complete idiot or he simply has lost all faith in Eli or his defense. Pick one, as regardless, it really doesn't matter.

This team and its coaches are a total joke. Not a single announcer or reporter picked up this snafu/lack of confidence.

It was not lost on the Giant faithful....They may be accused of sitting on their hands from time to time..but yesterday it was LOUD and I do mean LOUD. Their comments were downright funny in the stands. They were doing the "tick tick tick" stuff from 60 Minutes....I heard Timex commercials....Herman Edwards chants....everything!... but Tom Coughlin once again is as "clueless" as they come...the announcers might have said nothing... but the "everyday" fan in the stands knew it. You always here people talk about it....how knowledgeable the NY fan is. They are....defintely!

I too yelled at the TV set. I've been trying so hard to forget. But, still what pisses me off the most is the soft defense. Whoever wins the 4th and goal battle wins. Bobby,if you can find that stat amoung all the stats we see. I bet in all games that are close the team that wins the 4th and goal battle wins. Plus, how can Eli run a perfect drive to take the lead late to watch that Defense just give it all back effortlessly. Antonio Pierce is killing me.

Did you guys forget about Tiki Barber's failed two-point conversion try?

Let's see Tiki is taken out of the game every single time the Giants get anywhere near smelling the goal line. So Coughlin, the imbecile, besides screwing up the clock management at the end of the first half, decides to send Tiki straight up the middle for absolutely no gain??? The Eagles were laughing.

    You know what Bob?

Tom Coughlin/John Hufnagel...must think they are very savvy....

Yup, you are correct. They haven't used Tiki all year in short yardage...so what does that so called "Braintrust" do?

They run Tiki from 2 yards out straight up the middle for an attempted 2 point conversion. That play might have worked if Jacobs was in the backfield with Tiki...at least it would have given them another option or given Philly something else to think about. Even a "play action" call might have worked with Plaxico on a "fade", or Shockey running a "post"....

But NO.....The Giant coaching staff run a play that would succeed maybe 20% of the time.

    "Sechel" real "Sechel"

It is embarrassing to be a NY Giants fan. To have a game that is so pivotal & vital and come up with a performance where this team plays so poorly is an atrocity. This team has "quit"....and that is the worst thing you can say about any professional team.

How do I hate thee? Let me count the ways...

    1. Tom Coughlin...You do not practice what you preach. Disciplinarian? What a joke! You are incompetant and have lost the pulse of this team. If you are not fired at the end of this season then shame on John Mara & Steve Tisch.

    2. Eli Manning...We all know you are not your brother and never expected you to be...but, when the pressure comes you continue to turn your body "sideways" never square up and the ball sails on you...or you throw off your back foot....you look like a "deer in the headlights." The Giants need to get a quarterback coach here to show you the ropes. Goodbye Kevin Gilbride...gee we hardly knew you.

    3. John Hufnagel...How you became an Offensive Coordinator, I'll never know...you run a predictable offense...show nothing and all you are is truly "offensive!" See ya!

    4. Bob Whitfield...A 15 year veteran who plays with as much discipline as WWF wrestler. You take dumb stupid penalties ( also the Cowboy game a few weeks back) The Giants should cut you tomorrow!

    5. Offense...They were so pitiful they had to punt 9 times...never got to the "Red Zone" Manning was 9-25 for 74 yards.

    6. Special Teams...Muffed punt by Chad Morton, can't return or cover kicks all season.

    7. Defense...They unfortunately wore down because they were on the field so much.

    8. The Giant fans who stayed in the Stadium should be commended for enduring such a putrid football game. Today, this team couldn't beat the Columbia Lions!

    9. It's obvious to me that the Giants team meal before the game was nothing more than Egg Nog...Breakfast of Champions!

    10. Please...to the powers that be...hire a new GM with the forsight to rebuild this team and restore some "Giants Pride"

    Anybody care to disagree?

Totally blown away. The way we started, quick easy TD then the D holds and then the guy i really hate, the useless over the hill chad muffs punt and then full blown ineptness. For pure lameness ,one of worst games ever. When Eli finaaly throws good pass, Shockey drops it. Pathetic. What really hurts is how one ESPN er summed it up. They have the talent but completely clueless. When you don't have the talent there are no aspirations, to see real talent wasted, lack of effort,no discipline, nothing, nada. How about letting Saints convert 3 4th downs on one drive? How stupid is it that at 7-8 we are in the drivers seat for playoffs. We can actually lose and if all the other horrible 7-8 teams loss we are in at 7-9. Then all we need to do is borrow about 10 lbs of the "clear" from Barry Bonds + a few hundred black beauties and we have a ...slim shot to win a playoff game.HA, or in computer lingo LOL!Time to go spike my egg nog

This is Christmas Day and time for a Christmas miracle. Do you guys realize that the Giants can still be shooting their jump shot all the way to the SuperBowl even with a 7 and 9 record? Yes, it's true, as I checked the statistics and the G-Men are still in it.

According to Tiki, they are coasting to the finish line because they are better than all the other teams in professional football.

And don't dare tell Tiki Bird that the team was 6-2 when he announced his retirement, and that it did not become a distraction.

Let's see? Tiki keeps his big mouth shut and the team is steamrolling with a lock on the division at 6 - 2. He opens his big trap and the team goes 1 - 6.

Yup Tiki, did we really have to hear about your retirement announcement so that the networks can bid on your big mouth? Was it really worth it? What a truly class guy you are.

As for Osi, hey man, I loved the form on your jump shot yesterday with the Giants trailing by 3 TD's when you sacked the QB. Really classy as you looked like the complete fool that you are. Just another overrated loser who now doesn't speak to the press.

And where the hell was that excting wide-out Santana "Santa's" little brother Moss who apparently is growing somewhere under a rock because he sure doesn't play football. He was an excellent #2 pick in the draft. Thank you Ernie for your vision of sugar plums for that infamous trade for Eli as your legacy. What was Moss's excuse yesterday, his tummy hurt?

As a lifelong Giant fan I am sick and tired of these loudmouth prima donna's. They run their mouths pretty good but never seem to back up their own words. A young "Cassius Clay" they will never be.

Plexico you are a big time playmaker; but in my book, you are an even bigger LOSER. Only the Giants were smart/stupid enough to sign you, you cancer and put you in the center of the locker room.

And as for Tom Coughlin and his merry bunch of fools masquerading as assistant coaches, the sooner this entire joke of a coaching staff is let go, the better. There's no light at the end of the tunnel except for the oncoming train.

And one of the reasons I am not disappointed in this losing season is that it exposes all the warts for the entire world to see. That is except for the dumb, deaf and happy Jimmy "The Guitar Man" Dolan. Can you imagine if Cablevision buys the Giants? Isaih would be our new coach.

To have Eli, "the little deer frozen in the headlights," using a huddle when trailing by 3 TD's yesterday was an admission that Tom Turkey gave up on the game and this season. His fate and legacy is sealed.

And Tom Turkey, if you're waving the White Flag, why not send in the "Hefty Lefty" Jared Lorenzo so that we can get a line for next season if he can really play or not? Don't you think the Pillsbury Doughboy wants to play? Or does he just make and eat cookies on the sideline with your team of clowns?

And if he did light a spark under the team would that have been so bad? Where does it say Eli is Jesus and that YOU can't embarrass him? Hell, he's embarassed all of us just watching him play.

The honeymoon grace period is officially over. I said it to Mitch and I will say it again, Eli is a stiff, as he is the second coming of Norm Snead all over again. He stinks! Time to move on.

So in conclusion, as Stevie said, is it time to make the donuts or for pitchers and catchers to report yet?

Stevie always showed more fire and spirit then Eli has ever demonstrated. Peyton must be puking knowing that his little brother is so soft and a big stiff.

And while I am on a roll, I can't take anymore watching the Giants or the Knicks as one team is worse than the other. The only player on the Knicks worth watching who is a throwback to the championship years is David Lee. Of course he is a pass first ferocious rebounder. This is very bad for these Knicks who love to chuck up three pointers. It won't be long before these clowns for teammates turn on him.

But I feel so proud that at least the Knicks have the self proclaimed greatest point guard of all time in Stephon Starbury. The fact he said that publicly only shows how shallow he truly is. I guess Larry Brown wasn't so crazy after all?

Merry Christmas everyone as things could be a lot worse. The Yankees could sign Albert Bell tomorrow to make his comeback with Mr. Smiley Personality, Randy Johnson.

When will these executives realize that TEAM CHEMISTRY is everything! That's why you my Senior Boys were really the best. We really cared for each other and no one ever blamed anyone as we won and lost as a TEAM. When was this message lost??? Bring back Dave Baskin to coach these misfits.

Finally, Merry Christmas Mitch & Augie as you two should be very proud and I mean that sincerely.

You two never gave up the good fight. Too bad our G-MEN did not have your bark, bite, or pride!

Augie, sight unseen, I would have been proud to have you on our Senior Boys team as you really care.

And just so you know we stayed the same group forever. And the reason was, if any new camper acted up, it was always left to Stevie to straighten him out.

He always said, Bobby let me handle it. We did lose a few campers along the way, but rumor has it, that their bodies were never found. I guess none of you ever knew why Stevie's nickname was "Hit Man" Kiviat.

    HO HO HO

    Merry Christmas Everyone!

You know what is most troubling we have all rooted for our G-Men for 40 years give or take a few. Without insulting the brave and gallant warriors who spilt their blood, laid it all out on the line on every play, we now root for the uniform only.

Quite frankly Augie, you summed it up best when you said that the current team is a bunch of pussies and that includes the following:

Coughlin, Plexico, Jeremy, Tiki, Eli, Osi, and Strahan.

All have big mouths, big contracts and play the blame game so poorly that it makes true blue Giant fans and the magnificent warriors that came before them want to puke.

Take a jump shot fella's into the Makowsky Lake because that is where you should all drown.

The current Giants as constituted are an absolute disgrace and not because they're losing. No that's not the reason.

They're an utter disgrace because this collection of misfits is led by an incompetent coaching staff are all a bunch of individual LOSERS! They have destroyed Giant pride and ripped the heart out of their fellow teammates who do not possess the talent of these pansy players listed above.

There isn't one player that I would keep on this team nor it's coaching staff.

I now root for them to LOSE!

    Go JETS!

If Eric Mangini were the coach of the Giants and Coughlin the coach of the JETS what do you think the respective records would be?

As soon as one of these clowns opened his mouth do you really think they would still be playing under Mangini? Not a chance.

And that is the biggest difference between these men that actually stands for the word TEAM.

We have had bad teams before but never have I seen a bunch of clowns with this much talent waste it and then blame others because they lack the intestinal fortitude to leave 100% on the field of battle.

Rest In Peace you bunch of losers.

    This season is a disgrace!

Steve, David, Bobby, Augie & Roberta...

How many cliches are appropos here?

Let me say this...I will not get caught up in the euphoria following this Giants win!

In the first half I thought the theme song was "Mail it in Redskins"

It took a career game from Tiki (Mr. Crest Whitening Strips) Barber 23 carries for 234 yards & 3 TD to beat a Redskins team that have guys who tackle like they have "carpal tunnel syndrome"...commit stupid penalties ( gee...I wonder what other team does that? )

Any deserving NFL playoff team would have buried the 'Skins last night. (Am I wrong, David?...Steve?)

Let's not forget that Eli ( who couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat, I still think he's adopted ) Manning was 12-26 101 yards 1 TD. That does not inspire me as far as him being a quality NFL Quarterback! Mostly, he shoved the ball into Barber's gut... Then, he got out of the way...( An optimist would say he managed the game well ) But, Manning will not be able to carry them over the Cowboys or Eagles, one of which will be their opponent next week in the playoffs. ( There, I said the "P" word )

The Giants' Defense wilted in the 2nd half and let the Redskins back in the game. The only reason the Giants held on...is because they were playing a team that plays worse than the GMen!

I know when Augie comes on the blog, he will spin this as this was an inspired win. Maybe he is right? Maybe I'm being too cynical?....However, I have been watching the Giants since 1961 and I have never seen a team that talks so much smack and plays such uninspired football. They talk the talk, but do not walk the walk!

I do want to congratulate Tiki, because "he did" put the Giants on his back and played probably the best game of his career...so kudos to Tiki...maybe the other Giants will follow his lead...I do hope so, but I am a realist...

They are 8-8 and the shakiest team headed to the post season. They have no pass rush. Their tight end, who did not play last night, is limping. Their defense, was torched in the 2nd half for 21 points is average at best. There is no way Tiki is going to be able to run the ball next week like he did last night...so as much as I do love Big Blue....I'm not convinced...they will probably be "one & done"...At least I have a football game to look forward to next week....( maybe then Steve...I will close my eyes...By the way, Happy New Year to everyone!

Mitch,i mirror your thoughts. I've always lived for defense and ours has no real playmakers, losey D backs, mediocre and over rated LB's and with Osi slowed by injuries no pass rush and poor coaching.the only but(butt)is how poor the NFC is right now .We have a slim shot of getting hot,as long as Tiki is ready to become a living legend

I'll watch the J E T S today in my underwear, then get a snack and a DVD for New Years.

Tomorrow I'll watch some "real" football with players that really care and then I'll look forward to the "second season" starting next weekend.

Good luck to all the J-E-T-S fans today. I love both teams in the playoffs. My oldest son made my 8 year old Reed a JET fan and it's really funny watching him do the JET chant and wearing his Jet hat. Two traitors. I had taken Matt to Jet/Giant exhibition(Jet homegame) and during the game, the boy raised on LT put his Gman hat on my head and made me buy him his first Jersey(Chrebet) and it's been torture ever since. Payback is a bitch. Me and Sid tortured my diehard Yankee fan dad with the Mets.

The other day watching DirecTV I happened upon Channel 212 which is the NFL channel. And of all things they were talking about the year leading up to the Giants Superbowl win over Buffalo.

And there was OJ Anderson now looking about 75 talking on the camera. He mentioned how Jim Burt came up to him while he was the marquee running back with the St. Louis Cardinals telling him he would look great in a Giant uniform. And OJ told him that he was a star and would never be traded. A year later...

He comes to the Giants and becomes a backup to the rookie Rodney Hampton. He isn't playing much and realizes his career is over and plans to retire.

Then they cut to QB Jeff Hostetler and how he is just a back up after five years of futility behind Phil Simms. He tells his wife that he too is retiring. He offers to Parcels to play wide receiver and on special teams as the burning to compete is killing him.

As the year unfolds they cut to Carl Banks and how LT and Harry told him when he was drafted where did he think he was going to play as there was no room on the team for a loudmouth rookie at LB. It was amazing as the veterans took him under their wing and molded him into Killer.

As for Parcells they have footage of his sour demeanor and insults including Phil Simms and his assistant coach Bill Belichek. But through it all you fully understand that it was his psychology to push his players whether they loved or hated him to do their best. They then turn to that devastating playoff lost in overtime to the Rams as Flipper catches the TD and runs off under the bowels of Giant Stadium.

And then it is next year. Phil goes down and so does Rodney. The Giants season is apparently over. One of the rookie Giants tells Otis Anderson that there used to be a running back with the Cardinals who was one of the greatest runners he had ever seen. He asks Otis if he knew OJ and whatever happened to him? OJ says I'm OJ and the kid doesn't believe him.

Then both Jeff and OJ get to do their thing. The 49ers were the elite and beat the G-Men during the season which kills most of them. As they meet in the playoffs Parcells tell his team that no one gives them a chance. At the time there was no week off in between the Superbowl.

Parcells says to his players you have two choices. You can pick for one week to go to SF or you can pack for two weeks to head onto Tampa whichever you prefer. Parcells then throws down his suitcase in the lockerroom which is the largerst suitcase the players had ever seen. Such was his psychology.

And as we all know the Giants were losing to the 49ers late in the game. OJ told his teammates that his dream was to play in the Superbowl in his native Florida. As the game seemed hopelessly lost LT, the one and only, put a vicious hit on the ball carrier and recovers the fumble.

The Giants then march into FG range where Bair easily kicks the game winning FG with no time on the clock.

And to Tampa the G-Men go to meet the heavily favored Buffalo Bills who scored like 50 points in their last 3 games.

And then with all those great Giant defensemen Bellichek that genius calls them over. He says in order for the Giants to win the Superbowl they must let Thurman Thomas rush for over 100 yards. LT and Harry athe rest go nuts. They say no way is anyone rushing for 100 as that is their pride.

Bellichek says that they have to let Thomas rush as the game plan calls for them to crush and destroy all of the receivers as that is the only way they can beat the Bills. And that is exactly what they do as the game ends with the famous "WIDE RIGHT".

Watching this video and thinking of today's prima donna's made me yearn for yesteryear. If you get a chance to see this film don't miss it.

I don't know if any of you stayed up late enough to see the biggest sports story of the year by watching the Fiesta Bowl last night. Without a doubt it was one of the greatest games and stories ever told.

There was heavily favored Oklahoma, Goliath if you will, playing against former Division III team Boise State, David.

When the teams marched out onto the field it was so noticeable that the Oklahoma team outweighed the little Boise team by about 100 pounds per man. The man who started the team as their coach and then became the athletic director as they marched up the ladder was sitting in the stands at the ripe old age of 90.

Boise State did not even become a Division I team until 1996. If there was ever a mismatch it was this 12-0 team from the WAC conference against the juggernaut Sooners.

Boise State showed that they came to play as they jumped out to a 14 - 0 lead. But by the 4th quarter the score was tied and for all the world their bubble looked like it was about to burst when the Boise State QB threw an interception with less than a minute remaining that was run back for a TD by the Sooners.

But like Rocky, they refused to die. Facing 4th down and 18 with only a few seconds remaining on the clock they executed the best hook and ladder since Don Strock and the Miami Dolphins did it in the playoffs a long time ago against the SD Chargers. And they scored the tying TD with 7 seconds remaining.

Into overtime it went with Oklahoma scoring on its very first play. Back came Boise State the hard way as it was faced with a 4th down. And then like in Rocky the QB shifted to wide receiver and the FB took the snap and threw a TD pass as the crowd went crazy.

The coach who used every gimmick play in the book made the correct decision as he decided to go for two points and end the game right then and there.

And what a play it was as the QB took the snap with the entire Bronco team moving to the right. That is for one player who took the ball in the famous Statue Of Liberty play and headed all alone and waltzed into the end zone for the two point conversion and the win. The crowd went wild.

And then if this wasn't enough the star running back was being interviewed Rocky Balboa style. And he was the complete gentlemen as his answers were all what we wanted to hear from a team player.

And then to make the night complete he got down on one knee and proposed to the cheerleader of the team who said yes on national TV. And the coach was a million times brighter than Tom Coughlin.

If you get a chance to see the higlights of this game or to watch in its entirety don't miss it. It may have been the greatest game I've ever seen.

    Happy New Year!

    Bob...

I saw it "live" as well and it was spectacular!

The 2 point conversion to win the game ( on the old Statue of Liberty play ) was truly executed beautifully with the QB faking the pass to the right w/ 3 wideouts there....while with a deft touch "palming" the ball in his left hand hiding it away from the line and handing off behind his back to the running back was a thing of beauty. It was worth staying up for.

Yes! As Marv used to say....

Now you are talking...the Bullets vs. the Knicks. Those were absolute wars.

    Willis Reed vs. Wes Unseld
    Dave DeBusschere vs. Gus Johnson
    Bill Bradley vs. Jack Marin
    Walt Frazier vs. Phil Chenier
    Dick Barnett vs. Earl Monroe

Of course, Earl came over later and adjusted his game to compliment Clyde, and helped them win in '73.

That was as fierce a rivalry as there was!

And, David you are correct, they used to play basketball in New York.

When we had winning teams our Defense always stood tough when it counted at the end of the game. It was good tough hard fough game of two equal teams, real battle and Eli was true star on last drive WHEN IT COUNTED ,that D blows!

    It finally ended...

I could talk at great length of what went wrong in the game yesterday...but I don't want to bore you with what my strategy would have been...it doesn't matter anymore. And all of you probably do not want to hear it. Let's just say that...

    It finally ended...

It ended with nobody really knowing whether Eli Manning will ever show more poise then poison for an entire game.

It ended with an underachieving defense, unable to make a big stop at the end of a game. Has it ever since 1993?....

It ended with too many penalties and wasted timeouts which might have stopped the clock for one final chance...

    Some numbers worth noting...

2 TD's in 4 trips to the red zone. Also failed to punch it in when they were 1st & goal!

Eli threw an interception which led to 3 points (the final margin of the game)

Eli had a good first drive & good final drive with nothing in between, including 3 possesions at midfield and went 3 & out each time!

ZERO - That is the number of playoff wins for Tom Coughlin in his 3 years here!

So, if you are a Giant fan...what do we have to look forward to?

    We have no GM.
    We have no Tiki.
We don't know if we have a QB.

    Then...what do we have?

We have a coach who blames everybody but himself, but mostly the media. Oh, I forgot we have plenty of dumb, dumb players!

    Coughlin must be fired!!!

He said he would bring discipline to this team....nope

He said injuries were a cancer and he would rid them....nope

He has lost the respect of his players.

He has not helped in the maturation of Eli Manning.

    One thing is certain though...

Thirty seven days until pitchers & catchers, when some real New York contenders take the field.

Mitch, i don't want to appear to be happy or an optimist but don't lose sight of the fact that we could have/should have been a very good team playing real well. this wasn't chopped liver. We scored, they regrouped well,we regrouped back .Eli had Classic final drive and then the D blew it .but the d was without it's 2 impact players Strahan/Arrington and using mid season sign ups on the corners + Osi was playing hurt and don't forget Tuck was out all year too. i like the Notre Damer last year a lot. I do think that Eli needs to get consistent, but he stood in, took hits had some scrambles and one INT is not the end of the world, especially early on. His bro had 3 and won in a walk. Our red zone calling was lame. I'd dump Coughlin but we did make playoffs in year 2/3 and had mega tough schedule. Also, Pettigout was playing like All pro before he went down and we needed to move our guard to Tackle hurting 2 positions at once. I'd like see Brandon Jacobs get 25 carries a game and be like Christian Okoye

    Augie...

I do understand your enthusiasm, and you are a terrific Giant's fan but...everything you said I can find some fault with.

You said we should have been a great team. But the fact remains we weren't. We underachieved because we talk a better game than we played.

You said we had injuries. We did. Losing many defenders and also the Left Tackle ( which is the 2nd most important position on the team)...but Philly lost their QB Donovan McNabb, which "is" the most important position on a football team. They also lost Jevon Kearse ( their premier pass rusher ) Augie... you cannot use injuries as an excuse!

And now, the big question on this team...Eli Manning....

Every pro golfer has a swing coach and I believe Eli needs a "quality" QB coach. He has had nobody here who has helped him mature. I know you think he's terrific, and I hope he is but I still do not see it. He looks lost, is not a fiery leader ( I think a QB has to be that)

If the Giants were wrong with that pick then it sets the Giants back another 7 years. ( You have to give him another two before you deem it a bust)...and then draft a QB and wait 5 years for his maturation.

I certainly hope that is not the case.

That is why Coughlin has to go, NOW!

He has not done what he set out to do. He came here pontificating about discipline, injuries, pride etc.

The problem is that here with the Giants...the inmates run the asylum! You can't have players questioning everything the coaches do. And then the team just tunes him out. I'm sure he is a quality person, but his personality wears very thin on his players.

This of course is just my opinion. I may not be right, but I do not like the direction this team is going.

Augie...I hope you are right and this season is just an abberation.

Any other fans care to express your opinion?

It's Thursday time to forget home teams and talk playoffs. my temptation is to through everything out and just say: Who is really worthy of taking down the Pats? However, what amazes me is how under the radar the McNair deserves to win the big one talk is. How many QB's were huge underdogs and ended a yard away from the ring? This year is his destiny and with that D as long as he doesn't choke i'm going with the Titans. Let's get some thoughts out here. Site is dying.
BTW: the Knicks are really starting to look good. Lot's of pure young talent to hone in and Marbury starting to play like Phoenix days. Love David Lee

    For my Augie:

Augie I am going to help you in this weeks football pool. First the Giants will NOT lose again until September!

    My picks:

Augie take the Colts with the generous 4 points. Although the Ravens were my Defensive Team in the Fantasy League unless they can get to the REAL Mr. Manning early he will be throwing the pigskin all over the parking lot. The Ravens will not be able to keep up with Peyton. The Colts upset the Ravens without the points.

Next up the Saints. The heavens and the stars aligned themselves in the Big Easy. Give the 5 points and watch as Drew, Deuce and Reggie pound out their version of the Saints come marching in.

Chicago has the big bad BEARS but they also have REX who is not by any means a T-REX. I could never give 9 points with Terrible Rex Grossman as my QB. Take the generous 9 points and relax.

And last but not least I can't help but laugh as the world has already annointed the Lightening Bolts as the Superbowl champions. All I think of is Marty Ball in that he is a LOSER on the order of Tom Coughlin. And they have an inexperienced QB in Cry Me a Philip Rivers who has never faced a Bill Belichik defense before. Once the Bolts become one dimensional Tom Brady will carve them up like a Thanksgiving turkey. Take the generous 4.5 points and enjoy.

There you have it Augie. My picks laid out for you on a silver platter. Of course remember that following my selection could be hazardous to you wallet but with the way you have gone all year I figure that you could use the help.

    LOL

    May the best teams win!

    I love today & tomorrow!
    A football fan's dream!
Lynda has made her weekend plans!
    They do not include me!
    Isn't she terrific?

All you prognosticaters have checked in. Here's my take...

    Colts @ Ravens:

The Baltimore area & their fans have been waiting for this ever since Irsay moved the Colts to Indy in the middle of the night! Do not underestimate the "emotion" of this game. The fans will be frantic, & the players will feel it...the Ravens' "D" will be too much for Peyton to overcome and his playoff failures will continue.

    Eagles @ Saints:

The Saints are not the Aints anymore, and the stars seemed to be aligned perfectly. There is all that "good karma" this team seems to have along with Drew, Deuce, Reggie, & Marcus. The Eagles are a gritty bunch, but if the Giants took them down to the last 3 seconds of the game last week, then...well...'nuff said....

    Seahawks @ Bears:

Da Bears are not the same team they were at the beginning of the season. However, the Seahawks are certainly lucky Romo imploded last Saturday night! Chicago will win in spite of Rex!

    Patriots @ Chargers:

Ah!! The sexy matchup of the weekend. I have to agree with my "old counselor" Bobby. The Pats' Defense with its leader Belichick, orchestrating it will stop LT...( by the way, in my opinion there is only one LT...go find your own nickname ) and make the San Diego team rely on Rivers. ( who has not played well lately) He will crumble under the pressure and Brady adds another pelt to his resume.

Let me add that I do not bet, so that is why you see no reference to point spreads. I am a purist who loves athletic competition... also I never had much success with betting so that is why I don't.

    Enjoy your football everybody!

Good, not great games. I sure can't pick em this year. Last year I had a handle on the whole playoffs.i was :Karnac". This year a total geek. I'm happy for Peyton, who would have guessed that the colts would be breezing due to their D with Manning lobbing INTS? Saints could be the post Katrina team of destiny. Hope todays games are great.

Mitch, like you I no longer bet either. When I was younger I would always bet on the games. And most of the time, LOST.

My late father Dave told me you don't have to bet on football to enjoy it. At the time I thought I knew better.

Of course, he was right and about ten years ago, I stopped cold turkey; that is, except for a weekly pool that I do with my sons and their friends.

I finished tied for 3rd out of 25 this year and the same in our Fantasy League which I love. My son, Aaron, won the contest beating me in the semi finals.

As for yesterday, I had both winning teams but would have lost the Saints game on the points because Reggie turned into the early Tiki Bird and fumbled twice. If not for that, it would have been a big win in the Big Easy for the Saints.

Today, I like the Seahawks to keep it very close, if not win the game thanks to Terrible Rex, but at the very least, to put a scare into the big bad Bears.

And I expect Tom Brady and the Patriots to win the Marty Ball game outright.

Today was really awesome. Schottenheimer is cursed, that the Dback didn't knock down the 4th down INT and his fumble changed the game and Brady capitalized and won. For the Giants, your gonna tell me Rivers is still the golden boy? He stunk!!!!First game ,too awesome, both teams fought like champs and Grossman was on and what a great 49 yarder game winner. Also, after this weekend i don't feel that the Superbowl has to be an AFC blowout. i hope next weekend can at least equal today.Urlacher going deep in pass D and still great against run and blitzing was most impressive

    Bob,

Glad you liked it. Yes...it is always like this...some people who watch this program say they need a valium when it's over.

Hey Rob...we may need a thread just for 24 fans

Augie did you clean out your bookie? Inquiring minds want to know?

As for Philip Rivers, he ran into the Genius Belichick who as always magically turned him into ELI for the day.

You have to be kidding if you think you can trade ELI back even up for Rivers. No one would make that trade today. Augie, years ago the NETS acquired the 7 foot stiff Shawn Bradley. Some of my friends thought that the NETS made a STEAL getting the former 2nd pick in the draft. I told them that HE WAS and WOULD ALWAYS BE A GIANT STIFF.

    LOL

Help, I really have no rooting interest. No shot in any pools, no action. Not caught up in the fee good Saints, kinda like Da bears, tired of Pats winning but indifferent to colts. Should be great games Bears 27-Saints 17
    Colts 24 Pats 16. The way I'm picking I'll be o for 4 vs points and under/over

Sunday night at the "Kettle Black" nothing like seeing a great game in sports bar with great crowd. I admit it. I called my son up at halftime thinking the Colts were toast. manning stepped up and for a championship level game, has to be one of best engineered comebacks since the nfl/afl merger. For pure viewing pleasure it was the perfect matchup. 2 O lineman TD's, and one for Klecko Jr. Great runs, runbacks, catches, many awesome passes defended especially by Pats since Manning was really on. Loved it!Loved it!
Bears are for real but away from Soldier field, no real edge and the wau Manning id throwing now I would not want to see him in his no huddle .

Elli, which Manning are you talking about? Archie or Eli because you sure as hell can't be talking about Peyton.

Don Shula recently said the greatest passer he ever saw was Dan Marino. He also said the smarted QB he ever coached was Bob Griese.

And he summarized by stating that the greatest QB he has ever seen play who combined great passing with gray matter between his ears is none other than Peyton Manning. He called him the best of the best.

Coming from Don Shula that should carry a lot of weight. You can't blame Peyton for a team that doesn't play defense. No one can match him TD for TD on the field. When he is in rhythym he is a thing of beauty. Every team in the league would trade their QB for Peyton in a heartbeat. He is in a class by himself.

By the way, Peyton is the only QB in the NFL who is actually a coach on the field as he calls his own plays. I hope no one thought it was Tony Dungy???

Elli, Peyton isn't letting this one get away as the Colts win easily in a romp 28 - 10.

    Elliot...

Whether you like him or hate him, you can't ignore greatness. Peyton is one of the great QB's of all time. ( He already is in the Hall of Fame ) His play last week against the Pats should cement his legacy.

He led his team down 18 points at halftime to a victory over a team that was his "achilles heal" Belichick always devised a defense to combat his greatness.

I never pick games that well, but I would be very surprised if Chicago wins. Da Bears have a great defense, but they play a "cover 2" and Manning will eat that up! The key of course is the trenches where this game will be won or lost. Chicago relies on turnovers to score, so ball security will be paramount, but I believe the offensive line will give Manning enough time to score on the Bears. I can't see Chicago scoring enough points to stay with the Colts. Let's see...how about....

    Colts 37 Bears 24

Re: Peyton Manning. It's amazing how he always got the blame for all loses and was taken for granted in most wins. Elway couldn't win the ring till he was what about 35 years old and never took the heat beacause of the drive vs cleveland and similar drives. Marino always got a pass due to no great running back. Fouts, no Defense. Peyton was unbelievable in the comeback against an excellent D, well coached and real tight cover corners. Almost every missed pass was because of perfect D. I'm wooried he's gonna break Simms record for best completion% in the superbowl. Also as Mitch or Booby mentioned, he calls all the plays, unheard of for the last 30 YEARS!!! Take the over. Colt's 34-Bears 24

    My bad..."achilles heel" (sic)

Augie, I think Simms 88% completion record is still safe because Peyton will throw the ball away when he is pressured.

I think we should all give ourselves a "pat on the back" because this thread now has over 200 comments. Bravo! Bravo!

Football calls we never want to hear again...

6' 4" Norm Snead looking over the huddle, he drops back to pass, spots a receiver, and it's good for a 3-yard gain.

Rocky Thompson, the Giants number one draft choice cuts a very impossing figure. The handoff is to Thompson, he cuts to his right, now back to his left, he's in the clear and he's finally brought down for a 2-yard gain.

Ah yes, those were the calls of the late great immortal radio announcer Marty Glickman as he called Giants football games through his Augie Rose Colored glasses.

Norm Snead was a total bust although offering a very impressive physical appearance and had a rocket arm. His passes were usually less than ten yards.

As for Rocky, he was the best east - west runner in the game. Unfortunately, a running back must run north and south which Rocky did not want to do. He did not like the contact, a big no-no for an NFL running back.

Augie, I wish you were in my Senior Boys as I love your enthusiasm. For the record, I predict the Eli Manning experiment will end badly.

No not that he's a bad person or even a bad player; to the contrary, he's a good guy but he lacks the fire and the passion to become great. Either you have it or your don't and Eli doesn't! A QB must be egotistical a take charge no nonsense type of a guy in the huddle. Eli is as gentile as a lamb. It must be in the water.

    LOL

I tell you, I REALLY hate the Super Bowl.

For two weeks the papers and the
sports talk shows pick apart a game that only the fans of two cities care about.

Wonderful stories about how Peyton's mom makes him soup or what kind of shoes they need to wear, or who has a felony record or how many players have how many kids................all the stuff we really need to know.

As far as I'm concerned, the playoffs ended last Sunday and the Super Bowl should be played the next day. Let's see who is really tough.

Now I can't read the paper or listen to sports radio for the next two weeks.

Maybe I'll just chill out and listen to some Mantovani on my stereo.

    Bobby...

You & I are in agreement about Eli except for one thing......

He actually does get to go to the Super Bowl in only his "3rd season"

Too bad he will be in a suite with Archie, Olivia & Cooper.

Bob/mitch, Let's be clear on this !!(remember EST training?)I don't love Eli and hated the draft day trade and was in love with Rothsberger at that spot for us. What i see is a "potentially"great accurate arm, nervous feet but does take his licks and get up . I've seen a gasillion QB's go from crap to great after 3-7 years in NFL so think we need to ride him for at least 1 more season and pray he's the real deal.
Kiv, i hate the hype also and truly think that after Namath dominated the pre bowl hype, everyone else is an imposter. How cool was Broadway Joe that week ,hanging around the pool like Hef?

Yo E as much as peyton needs to take some blame he was truly Belichecked out of playoffs till he finally figured Bill out in 2nd 1/2. Can Lovie put together a Belicheck game plan? He can but i tend to think the curse was broken. Without Brown playing I see Dallas Clark with another big game as the 2 deep doubles Wayne/Harrison

Ok....it is Superbowl week. Here's a question for all you footballers....

Tony Dungy becomes the 5th Head Coach to not only coach a Super Bowl, but to play in one as well.

Who are the other 4 Head Coaches to accomplish this as well?

da da da da da da da!.....
da da da da da!...da da da da da...
da da da da da da da... dom de dom de dom dom dom! Boom Boom!

    Dan Reeves?
    tom Flores?
Mike Ditka and the guy that coached Cincy Sam Weichert(something like that)
I'm really staying out of charactor and not thinking the great D will win. I believe the Peyton legacy is coming to fruition unless the criminal brings one of his assault rifles and literrally blows him away. Love that TANK who states "I'm not violent"

    Close but no cigar!

    Dan Reeves is correct
    Mike Ditka is correct
    Sam (Bubba) Wyche is correct
Tom Flores is "incorrect"...he was on the roster but never played in the Super Bowl.

You are missing the one everyone forgets...
I'll let you know tomorrow unless someone else guesses...

    Hooray It's finally over!!!

I watched Rome on HBO because the game put me to sleep.

Well the mediocre season is finally over. And Peyton has laid to rest forever that he can't win the big one as his Colts were victorious.

Tony and Lovie had their lovefest with both showing class and smarts.

And if I know Lovie, he will immediately announce that there will be an open competition for the QB spot on the Bears. This means that the Rex Grossman experiment is officially over. He may be the worst QB in the NFL?

As for us NY fans we can all dream about next season and hope for some maturation from Eli and some valium for his coach. For Jet fans, some new draft picks and more genius from Mangini.

And for Stevie who watched Roman Holiday on HBO, some NASCAR racing from Joe Gibbs as he fine tunes Hail To The Redskins!

How many days until QB's and T.O. report, and stay tuned, as have we seen the last of The Tuna?

    LOL

I hope Bobby Hutt is OK, such a short email. It was enjoyable game. I loved playing in the rain so when all the early fumbles occured and Wrecks kept falling it was a change of pace from the more recent bowls. Wish i bet on Hester to score first points, i think it was 12-1 odds. Manning as the general dismantled the Bears systematically, thourough. After early INT he didn't take chances and had them on their heels all the way, made his RB's look like hall of famers. Colts were Awesome controlling the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Loved his roll right throw left completion and his pump fake opened it up for the Wayne TD that looked so easy. Ouch, going cold turkey is tough way to withdraw. Quick I need Mel Kuiper, who we drafting.

Mitch, Mitch, Mitch! You are slipping on me my friend.

TE = you said Mrosko and Mullady?

I am getting worried about you.

The biggest Giant bust of all at TE was first round pick, the 14th pick overall in the 1992 draft, Derek Brown.

A physical specimen at Notre Dame, Brown looked as if he would redefine the tight-end position in the NFL. Brown did change the way people thought about tight ends: Teams no longer wanted to take them in the first round. He had 11 catches in three seasons with the Giants before being cut. Brown also gets lumped in with the Jets' No. 15 pick that year, Johnny Mitchell, another historic tight-end bust
